I am coppying this from the etec owners group forum in hopes of getting some help here!

My tilt and trim unit is not working! at ALL. Nor does my ignition, nor does my tach. I have almost NO corrosion. I am using an evinrude tach and a Teleflex binnacle mount, I have the modular wiring harness, and the modular wiring system key switch. I am using all this with a 2009 25 horse etec.

when the key is on I can pull start the motor no prob. turn the key off the motor turns off. the tilt and trim I have no idea, it just quit working. again, no corrosion, and that is a straight run back to the motor via the harness) I have #4 battery cable going straight to
the motor no fuses or switches.

I am not concerned about the tach or the ignition, but how the heck do I get the tilt and trim to work?

there is a single 10a fuse that is under the cowling; that fuse is PERFECT! I figgured there had to be a fuse somewhere on the motor and I found that one- it is in exellent shape.

to note: when I try the tilt switch I dont hear any type of relay or pop/ clicking sound. same goes for the electric start.

thoughts?

L.R.

PLEASE HELP!

Blown rectifier explains all your symptoms.

Without a rectifier, the tach doesn't get a signal, and the battery doesn't get charged.

Where is the rectifier located? I have never heard of such a thing. sounds like a warranty issue to me-

thanks so much!

Can't say exactly where, on that motor...On most models, its at the end a red wire on the starter solenoid post along with the battery (+) cable (that's how the battery gets its charging voltage).

It converts AC from the stator to DC for charging the battery, and supplies the tachometer signal.

Check & see if your battery's dead and if it is, test whether or not the motor's charging it. If the motor's not charging the batt, that'll be your number one suspect. If it is charging then something else is wrong.

Disconnecting the battery while the motor's running is the quickest way to smoke the rectifier. And corrosion/loose connections on the battery cables.

A bit cold & wet this weekend for fishing.....................

I wouldn't touch this thing with a ten foot pole and take it back to the dealer.

update for all now that the weather is terrible and I cant get the boat out. the problenm was 2 fold. #1 my ignition switch was bad. 37.00 new switch installed easy. #2 however was more problematic. My factory wiring harness had a bad connection which led to Corrosion! YUCK. Thank goodness I have a GREAT mechanic what helped me track down the issue. he started with the motor and systematicly went through everything- the harness on the motor, the tilt and trim on the motor, the coil on the motor, the starter, etc.... once the motor was given a clean bill of health we went to the console and ignition, found ignition had issues replaced it then went to harness between ignition and motor. He is VERY electrical savy- I am NOT. I pulled the harness about 4 feet and found the main power wire for the starter switch has a splice in it for the tilt and trim. wouldnt you know it was TOTALY coroded. so I cut it out, and rewired it. Instant success!

I was so hoping it wouldnt be a problem with the etec! and it was not!

I hope this may help someone else~!

Still would be a warranty issue would it not, it's a year old, unless BRP only warranty the motor itself sans wiring. I'm glad you got it fixed, I went over the diagrams of this motor, emm and sensors everywhere!!!
