I don't understand why I can't reinstall my bearing carrier in my alpha one gen 2. I can get to where the top of the bearing carrier is flush with the top of the threads for the big spanner nut then no more. It seems like its hitting something but I can't imagine what. I have taken it in out several times and always at the same place it stops.

Help!

unless the teeth on the reverse gear are not meshing with the pinion or the alignment key is still on the carrier and hanging. or maybe the clucth is in reverse and hitting the lugs on the gear.

Not sure what an alignment key is, saw something about it in the manual but I dont think I have one. I beat the hell out it and it finally went in. The reverse gear seems to be working but the shaft has about 1/4 of play back and forth.

Is this normal?

the genII does not use a key. the hammer method is not usually the prefered method. however I have used the handle to tap it down. sometimes its tighter than my arthritic thumbs can push. just rotate the drive shaft and make sure the clutch is in the fwd position when instaalling the carrier as well as the propshaft thrust washer is properly positioned.

Re: Help! bearing carrier wont go in!

I hit something and broke the skeg off. I couldn't get the carrier out thinking it was corroded. I took it the shop to have it pulled and the skeg repaired which they did. However due to the fact that it would not reinstall with the normal force I now beleive that the lower unit is probably damaged/bent from the impact that severed the skeg. Soooo, 300 down the drain for pulling the carrier and a new skeg, as Bondo said, I don't see this outdrive lasting a long time.....

Thanks anyway!

If the bearing carrier was removed, and then the welding was performed, the housing may be distorted.Normally welding is done with the gearcase assembled.

DHP
