call your local mercury repair shop and ask, as I am not 100% sure if it will fit or not.

They should be 100% interchangeable. Take a look at the Mercury diagrams on www.boats.net or www.crowleymarine.com to name a few, and compare the powerhead base gaskets, for example.

If they are the same part numbers (and I bet you'll find they are!) then the bolt patterns are obviously the same.

The spline count on the crankshafts and even the ign systems will be the same, too.

1976 lower gear housing assembly
http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/464_150.cfm

1979 lower gear housing assembly
http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/481_16.cfm

thanks for the tip. I knew I saw these pages before, I just couldn't find them

so these two pages have almost all the same part numbers, so it's a good chance.
I've also emailed crowley to confirm
I know if 7920 got on, he would know.

I'm looking for some more confirmation, so if anyone knows where to find the info, please post it up. I'm making the purchase saturday
thanks

They all bolt up the same. Sorry I misread your orig posting and was thinking about powerheads. The lower units all have the same bolt spacings, spline count, pump housings, etc. If it should happen that the shift shaft lengths are different, those can easily be changed as well. But I expect you'll find everything is identical. The different part numbers on the gearcases would only indicate an upgraded casting.

Now, if you go into the very early 70's or maybe late 60's, some of these had a backwards-shifting lower unit. But not within the year range you're talking about. Easily checked, as the shift shaft will rotate CCW from Fwd-to-Neutral-to-Reverse. The older L/U's shifted in a CW direction to go from Fwd to Reverse.

thanks so much.
I've been trying to get this outboard going for about a year now.
I'm on a tight budget so I've been keeping an eye out for parts. this one is too good to pass up.

now all i need is a carb rebuild kit and probably a water pump kit once I get this lower unit

i've heard these motors are good, but some family members think i may be wasting my money on it.

thanks again

Those 20's have lotsa pep and are great on a smaller boat. I think you'll be surprised at the performance once you get 'er going. After all, she's 1/2 of a Classic 50/40, one of the best motors Merc ever built (besides the Tower of Power Inline Six!).

On the carb kit, unless it's hammered all you'll need is the fuel pump diaphragm renew kit, a needle/seat assy if you think it needs it, and maybe a 'carb packing' kit. All of the 'hard' parts, jets, emulsion tubes, etc can be re-used. The carb packing kit contains a carb gasket and the various little gaskets, fiber washers, etc you'll need when you reassemble.

My Sierra parts book shows an 18-2007 carb gasket kit which looks like it has every gasket in/out of the carb including the ones for the fuel pump, minus the diaphragm. I'd recommend replacing the diaphragm also, it's getting on in years and with the ethanol-laden fuels will likely be eaten up in short order. I'd expect that the newer materials are more ethanol-resistant.

The book shows the above kit as a replacement for OEM P/N's 1399-5135 and 1399-5198.

P/N for the carb float, if you need one, is SIE 18-7209, OEM P/N 1395-9293.

The iBoats store carries Sierra parts, if you can't find them here, try www.boatfix.com

Re: HELP: broke 1979 20hp -will the lower from a 1976 20hp fit?

thanks sooo much for all your help.
so far I've gotten a seloc repair manual and bought that foot.
found the water pump kit, fuel pump and carb kit thanks to your help and will be ordering those this week.
after that I'll have less than $200 total in this outboard and I can probably sell the old foot and prop on ebay to get some $$ back.
hope to be running in a few weeks.
then its time to tackle the poor trailer
