Friend had boat out today, his brothers boat, and when he parked it at house tonight, he was almost crying. Prop was busted and part of lower housing (fin) was missing..Any thoughts on what the total fix is? Know he needs prop, but are there any options for broken fin other than new lower unit housing?
Please help, he weighs 300lbs and is a sad sight crying.
Alpha One outdrive.

Must've really hit something hard. Just how much of the 'fin' is damaged? Some people just leave it that way and get a new prop.

A worn or broken skeg should be repaired if it does not extend further than the props low point of rotation. It is intended to protect the prop from damage. Usually a skeg repair "cover" is placed over the remaining portion of the skeg and attached with screws. Stainless steel skeg repair kits are about $100...do it !

Hate to sound negative, but if he hit something hard enough to break the skeg and prop, there's a fair chance something internal got broken as well. Put a new prop on and test. If it's OK, then just put on a skeg repair cover (You local boat dealer can weld a new one on too, pretty cheap) and off you go!

Good luck!

To

Here's the fix for the skeg.

http://www.skeggard.com/store.asp

Put a new prop on it and see if works OK. In the meantime, remove the prop and rotate the prop shaft by hand. If it doesn't look bent, it's probably OK.

What excellant inputs, thank you all. Will post final results, but I think this will be enough to stop the tears. Hope damage didn't get gears!

After the skeg repair take it for a blast, come back and check for water in the drive.

Skeg to be repaired by local shop for 90 bucks, prop was 108. No damage to lower gears. Lucky day huh? Thank you all.
Didn't know what a skeg was until yesterday.

I am glad it was not too expensive a repair. But skeg? I think thats what I get beer from in backyards plural.
