I want to purchase a 15 HP Evinrude tomorrow. I am looking at two of them. One is a 1983 the other a 1986. I spoke with both the motor owners. They both say they are in great shape and run very well.

I am asking whomever knows anything about a 15HP Evinrude for assistance in helping me pick out one of these motors. What do I need to ask the seller? What do I need to make sure the motor has? How do I know I am picking a solid motor?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Help buying a 15 HP evinrude

I've got an 86 15Hp Johnson (same as the Evinrude).

What I would do is look the motor over as best as you can. Look at the powerhead and see how clean it is. You can tell fairly quickly how well a motor may have been looked after and treated just by its general appearance condition (but not all the time) :p

If you have a compression tester, take it with you and test the compression on both engines. You want each cylinder to be within 10% of each other on the compression reading, and ideally each over 100 (but not as critical as having both readings close to each other).

Pull the spark plugs and have a look at them. If they are brand new, you might have cause to suspect problems. Owner may be covering up some ignition issues by using brand new plugs. If not, look for poorly conditioned plugs that are black or crusty. You want fairly clean plugs with a light tan coloration on them (indicates healthy ignition and combustion).

As them to start it up and check for telltale water stream. This doesn't really indicate there is good flow around the motor but will at least let you know the impeller and water uptake is in serviceable condition.

Look for any burning or discoloration on the heads as this could be a sign of overheat damage. If you have an infrared thermometer, check the head temperature while the engine is running.

have them start it up and listen to see if there are any unusual noises and if testing in a tank, give the throttle a little nudge and see how quickly the engine responds to changes in throttle. Check also how smooth the gear change is. Could indicate gear problems if it is very clunky or hard to get into gear.

Look for leaks of anything anywhere!

Thats about all I can tell you.

Most other checks require pulling something off the motor.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Re: Help buying a 15 HP evinrude

Thanks guys. I purchased the motor. He wasnt able to start it for me. he gave me a 10 day warranty. It looks like it's in great shape. Took it out today and tested it. It planed my boat out nicely. I shut down the motor in the middle of the lake and when I tried to restart I pulled the cord and the cord would not reel back in. had to reel it in by hand. Do I need to buy a new recoil or can I fix that one I wonder?

Had some trouble starting it also. Seems like it takes about 7-8 pulls to get it going. Great motor for the price though. Reliable seller also.

Re: Help buying a 15 HP evinrude

I am getting to you kinda of late but I have a 85 15hp and it had a few problems that I have ironed out. Your starter will need to be soaked in fuel or some kind of cleaner, the old grease is I am sure all hard and sticky, mine was like that. Take the rope pulley off and just put the spring cup and spring in gas or something like that to let the solvent break up the old grease and when putting the thing back together use a little water proof grease on the spring and the rope pulley and a little 2 cycle premix on the shaft that goes through the middle and it will work like a charm. Easy fix.
