Hey guys, i'm planning a trip up to San Fransisco/ the california delta for this weekend. Never been there before, and I tried calling a bunch of marinas, but they mostly have berths and slips only and no public launches. Dont think they'd tell me where the public access and/or secret launches are anyways... :) Got any ideas for cheap/free launch or camping sites? Small boat with a heavy duty trailer so I dont need anything fancy but I do need some form of a ramp/slope. I'm looking to launch near Sherman Island, or Mildred Island, but really anywhere inland from San Fransisco Bay will do. The tighter the waterways the better, for my purposes (fishing in calm and shallow water!).

Re: Help! California Delta Launch Ramps?

I know there are a bunch of ramps. We also live in the LA area. Stockton is the closest for us & we figure time spent on the water getting from there to anywhere else is time well spent.
I don't have an address but you can see the ramp on MapQuest. It's on W. Fremont St. When you're on Hwy 5 & JUST after you cross the river in Stockton, get off the Fwy & cross under it to the launch ramp.
I just discovered something looking at it on MapQuest. This is the Latitude & Longitude for the ramp: W Fremont St, Stockton, CA 95203
37.953549, -121.314993 (Address is approximate). Just plug it into your GPS & go there. Aint Science Grand!

There is no ramp there!
The last free ramp in Stockton is at Lewis Park and the end on Monte Diablo. Not a safe place to leave a car.

Lewis Park to the far left, your Long and Lat marked with A and my house with a O. I have to putt by the Lewis park ramp on my way to open water.

Is there an online resource somewhere that has information like this? A wiki or something that would allow people to add access areas that they are familiar with for those visiting an unfamiliar area.

Re: Help! California Delta Launch Ramps?

Thanks guys,
I ended up calling a few marinas and launched where I camped. Launch was typically 10 dollars and tent camping sites were 25-30/night. I did pass over that bridge but didnt exit to look around, as I was already paying for a campsite and launch. Good thing since it was pointed out where it really is! That picture of the sign CRACKS me up! and I believe it as well!! JulianDave, there isnt one that I'm aware of but I would just look on google. The thing is tho, that people are not gonna want to give away their secret launches or make-shift/gravel/dirt road launches. If you go into a AAA branch though, they will be able to give you camping maps, and the Federal, State, and Local campgrounds are listed for different areas, and it should also tell you if fishing/boating is permitted, at which point you can either call the campground, or assume that if there is boating, there must be a launch ramp. :)

For anyone reffering to this post in the future, what I ended up doing was looking on google earth for potentially favorable fishing spots (geographically speaking), and the pictures were actually clear enough for me to look around each area to find visible dirt roads/county roads, and Launch Ramps. Ramps as part of a marina or business will have an icon above it, which will give you their contact info.
