Hey guys i'm just wondering is there any website which goes through the steps of changing the water pump or is there somewhere on this website?

my mercury outboard is an 1150 115hp with a blue band. it's the distributer model. serial number is 4736053.

i have bought the new impeller and gaskets but just need to know any tricks to get around and the right way to do this.

I also bought a fuel pump kit as i was told it's a good idea to do this too.

i am a motorbike mechanic by trade so am confident to do the job.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thnkas,

You should use a Merc manual, but you can use the search option at the top of the page and get plenty of info.

Good luck!

Bexi, If you have never replaced a waterpump, get a manual of some kind. Although it is an easy procedure, you will want to have some "help" the first time through. Set the shifter to neutral, and loosen the bolts on the LU. There is one hidden under the zinc tab above the prop. The zinc tab unscrews using a 1/2" thin wall socket (3/8 drive) thru the hole above the zinc. Don't forget to grease the shift and driveshaft before reassembly. You must turn the flywheel by hand to line it up with the driveshaft splines.

Those few tips plus a manual will see you thru.

BTW - change the impeller, stainless plate the oring under the pump base and all gaskets. The kit will have extra parts included, since it is used for many motors. if the upper pump body is scored or cracked, replace it as well.

search for 1999 force 40 hp replace impeller. I'm also a beginner but was able to do everything right the first time. It is more easier to ask questions here if you sho them pictures about your concerns.
By the way I have pictures on that thread that might be helpful for you.

One tip: Impeller is bigger than its housing so experts advice is to twist either the impeller housing or the drive shaft. What I did is to turn what is easier to me at that time. But here's the tip, make sure you turn them in only one direction. If you're moving the impeller housing, turn it counter clockwise and if moving the drive shaft, turn it clockwise. This will ensure your impeller bends to the left. Actually the only way to see if it bended to the left is to open it again after maybe 30 minutes and see how it looks.

Hi jimg984
what do you mean when you say "try avoid shifting the lower unit as shown in the vidio" ???
what are you referring to when you say lower unit?

oh and also, if my engine is pumping any water at all out the top squirt hole (whatever it's called), am i likely to have more of an issue than just the impeller?

Re: Help changing water pump - old mercury straight 6

water needs to be coming outta the top hole to show that the pump (impeller) is working

lower unit is the unit you take off the motor at the bottom to replace impeller.......
in the vidio he shifted the lower unit to turn the prop to rotate the shaft at the impell goes on

good luck
