Re: Help choosing proper intake manifold

Ok, all the new parts are in. Installation will begin this evening after work, and with a little luck I'll be on the water this weekend.

I'm going to head to Home Depot with the new intake manifold to find some suitable plugs for the vaccum ports that are in it. Should I be wrapping the plugs with teflon tape or RTV or something?

I used pipe dope to avoid the teflon strings.

Re: Help choosing proper intake manifold

Got one more for you all. The back 2 water ports in the factory intake manifold were blocked. The new intake manifold gaskets I have here also have metal plate in the last two ports to block them off. BUT, the new Edelbrock intake manifold I have has the water passeges open. Any advice?

What kind of boat is this powering and what kind of performance gains are you expecting? I have a 97 Crownline 202 with what I believe is the same engine and I am toying with the idea of performing the same change on mine this coming winter. Really eager to hear what you think of the results.

Good luck!

It's powering a 21 foot Sylvan. I did the first water test yesterday, and everything seems to be working well. Smooth acceleration, etc. GPS says 48 MPH, which is actually 1 MPH slower than it was with the 2 bbl and stock intake. So if you're looking to do this for performance gains, I'd pass. At this point it's about the same as before.

The carb is a rebuilt 4bbl off of an older 350. '84 I believe. It has a Mercruiser tag on it, not sure if the number will help.

Boat only sees fresh water, no salt. And it's a NON-Vortec engine.

Best place to purchase the intake?

All 1986 and newer chevy small blocks are vortec. This is important when ordering an intake.

Vortec engines use centerbolt valve covers and 2 of the intake bolts are straight instead of angled. You can modify an early style intake to work by drilling the holes out for the straight bolts but if your buying a new intake it's best to buy the right one.

WRONG
The vortec name was introduced in the eighties, but the REAL vortec heads did not appear until 1996.

Vortec engines use centerbolt valve covers

So do non-vortec engines from 1987-1995

and 2 of the intake bolts are straight instead of angled.

On a vortec head ALL of the intake manifold bolt holes are vertical, and there are fewer, only 4 on each side.

FWIW - GM was "all vortec" in 96, but Mercruiser and VP were not. They used up remaining non-vortec stock and phased them in over a 2 year period.

regardless, he still needs an intake for a vortec as would any chevy small block from 1986 on. and all generations of iron sbc's have the same ammount of intake bolts and only the center 4 are vertical, not all of them.

Nope,... That's Not right... Shabah has it Right....

There has been 3 Different series of SBC heads used on boats...
Pre-86,...
86 to 95...
And 96 to current...
They do Not interchange at the intake flange....

All of the conditions were the same, EXCEPT, we had 2 LESS people onboard when I made the slower run. My point was, don't expect a 10MPH improvement, because it's probably not going to help.
