Re: Help. Computer crash

what did you do???? :p
assuming the laptop already recognizes the ethernet
card, just plug it in and install the cable software
from the CD. get tech. support from local
cable co. on the phone while yur installing for
extra help. also a good idea to turn off the
cable modem and then turn back on, this will give
you a clean IP address.
ps. reason for cable co. tech is yur gonna need
some acct. info and most folks don't have it
written down. installation CD will require this info.
good luck, actually easy if you have the info.
required.

power down laptop, plug in ethernet connection,
disconnect modem, fire her up. will need to change
connection from dial up to ethernet in control
panel.
1 step at time. first gotta get laptop to use
ethernet card instead of modem.

Do I need to shut down the cable modem and then hook it up to the laptop and turn the modem back on and then the laptop?

On your desk top did you try startup with the start up disks. If you dont have them sometimes you can start up using the original installation discs that came with the computer. When doing this disconnect the cable modem prior to start up. If it starts you up you will be in safe mode then you can use a system restore point to hopefully get you computer up and running

Very simple if you have an ethernet card in the laptop. With your dial-up connection, download the "Sygate" program. Good for free for 30 days and does all the configuring for you. Try it, it works..

web page

SBN,
concerning the desktop PC, when it goes to boot up, press whatever key it says to enter the bios, usually esc. but it may also be f1 or f2.
Navigate to the primary master hardrive until its highlighted. Press enter so the bios attempts to locate the harddrive. If it locates it, exit out of the bios saving your changes.
The PC should boot up then, recognizing the harddrive.

Re: Help. Computer crash

That's just it, it don't even try to boot.
The IBM sign comes on and when I hit Esc twice, it comes up and says, "Boot failure, insert boot disk in drive A"
So I do that and it goes through it's stuff and tells me, "This will try to fix problem, machine will reboot in 5 seconds"
Then says "no parameters found or something like that, no drive detected".

Re: Help. Computer crash

SBN ...My humble suggestions

1) Disconnect all external devices from your computer except the monitor, keyboard & mouse. Especially printers. (Do this with everything 'powered down'.

Why? Static. H.P. printers, especially parallel port versions are notorious for this. I have seen countless hard disk failure bios reports saying 'no drive' because of this. No idea why. Cable?

2) Power up the computer with only the above 3 devices attached. If it still reports no hard disk, go into the Bios setup and restore the 'factory defaults', save & exit, reboot re-enter the BIOs setup and use the 'auto detect hard drive feature if it fails to find the hard drive.

Thanks WoodRust.
Just came back from the "doctor" and he said the hard drive was in fact bad.
He had it hooked up with just keyboard and monitor.
Used and emergency disk to get it to power up and it did not see any hard drive.
He hooked another hard drive up to it and the windows loaded up, so I will talk to IBM tomorrow since it still is under warranty and see about them getting me another hard drive.

Re: Help. Computer crash

SBN,

Do you have any important info on that drive that you need to keep? If so, you can try a method that may sound crazy. It just may work. Take the actual hard drive itself, not the whole pc just the hard drive, and put it in your freezer overnight. Don't laugh this really works sometimes. In essence, the cold causes the parts to contract and recontact each other for a short while. Then the next day, take it out and put it in another pc as the slave drive and copy your files over if it can be detected. Be quick though, you don't want it to warm up and quit on you. I've also had harddrives not be detected by the bios if they were the only drive hooked to their IDE cable. Seems strange, but if you put a slave(another hard drive or a cd-rom) on the same cable as the harddrive, it may detect it then. Just make sure that the added device is set to slave and the hard drive is set to master. Anyways, good luck and keep us posted. :)

James

PS: Only take it apart if it won't affect your warranty or if you REALLY need the info off that drive.
