Just bought a 2000 Weldcraft Renegade with a 4.3 liter vortec. Engine has a little over 200 hours. Guy told me the engine was removed 4 years ago for a recall, something to do with the oil pump. When I test drove I guess I missed the oil leak. After taking it out for a test run I lifted the hood to make sure it was all good, oil was dumping from behind the harmonic balancer.

Last night I got the the front of the engine apart to get to the timing cover. That’s when I found out to replace the timing cover and main seal you also have to pull the engine because the oil pan gasket has to be replaced. I’m not sure which past is leaking but I’m assuming those 3 parts need to be replaced.

Anybody ran ran into this problem and have any advice? The engine seems straight forward to removed but, I’ve never had a jet and I’m not sure how it’s separated from the engine, big job or no?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the reply’s. Anybody ever try just replacing the timing cover without doing the oil pan too? I know you have to get that lip over the oil pan gasket which would be a pain but I’m hoping it’s a possibility. Just recently found out the guy completely lied to me, he knew nothing about the boat. The good news is I went to the dealer and got the real story. The engine was completely rebuilt in 2014 and only has a few hours on it. There is no silicone around the edges of the cover where it meets the pan so I’m assuming the cover just wasn’t installed right.
