Re: help!did i get ripped off?

Don't worry about getting ripped off, the motor runs. Chalk it up to experience and replace the impeller yourself. A small price to know it is done right. You spent as much going back to the seller. I bought a 7.5 1977 Gamefisher that runs but have not water tested it yet in the lake, only in a barrel. Trust me it only takes once to become very wise about used outboards. Good luck!

Re: help!did i get ripped off?

solved the problem myself.

he called me and said dont worry i called a dealer and the said that the 1979 doesnt blow water out the hole till the motor heats up.
i told his dumm ***,that its a 1974 not a 79.

i took the think apart and it did have a new pump like he said.
i was looking at the housing and everything and i noticed the pump housing wasnt seating against the flat base plate all the way.
further inspection had me realizing the the metal cup the impeller rides in wasnt going into the housing all the way.

i looked at parts diagrams and the 79 pump housing had a dif part number than the 74.

so i had to file some of the water pump housing down so the impeller cup would go in all the way.
he did say his mechanic was some 22 yearold.

its pumping like mad now.

ty for the help.

ps....not gonna tell the guy i fixed it.let him feel guilty.

How many people get a warranty on used stuff? You check it out and pay accordingly. Sorry that it worked out like it did but it happens. I sell something used and they are more than welcome to test it thoroughly there in front of me and make a decision. If they leave with it, it is theirs. Dont know what you paid for it but if all it needs is a water pump your lucky because that is something that should be replaced on all used motors when you buy them regardless.

I tell anyone I sell a motor to if they have a problem to bring it back and i'll fix the issue, hell i'd even go get it cause I'd be embarrassed about my shoddy work (within reason of course, not 2 years later LOL) just like in this example. If I sold a motor and the guy brought it back the next day I'd bloody well pull it apart and fix the issue. At least this guy even though he didn't do the work himself paid someone else to do it and it had new parts, he was as honest as he knew according to his "story".

Just my opinion........... The guy didn't try to give you the shaft. It was a total accident. Everything the man told you was true as far as he knew going by your own quotes. Call the guy up and tell him what happened. He doesn't deserve to feel guilty. It was an honest mess-up. It seems that it is bothering the fellow about this because he took the time to call a dealer and ask them about it. Cut him some slack-things don't always go as planned. That said, he should have tested it before selling it---dumb mistake (but a mistake just the same).

Re: help!did i get ripped off?

When I sell a motor I run it in the tank, shift fwd, neutral, and aft, show the buyer where the water comes out, tell him what fuel mix to use and what plugs to use. On paper. I also tell em to carry a spare set of plugs and a plug wrench. Don't run it out of the water etc.
Most of the people who I've sold small outboards to haven't got a clue about them. I MEAN-NOT A CLUE!!
AND-I tell em if they have trouble, bring it back and I'll fix it or return their money. This way I can live with myself. It's a hobby to me, not an occupation.

If the waterpump impeller comes back shot to hell after I replaced it before the sale, I'll replace it and show the guy the result of running the motor out of the water.
Cheers

I would suggest that you replace the pump cover fairly soon with the right one. Your MacGyver fixit job could result in a premature failure. my $.02
