Is that one of those short squatty motors? Made by McCulloch. It's been many moons since I have messed with one of those, and when I did I didn't have much use for them. As I faintly remember the carb fitting is some sort of overflow for priming the carb. The big nipple on the midsection is the inlet for a bailer pump. When running, the motor would bail your leaky old wooden rowboat.

How is your plastic hood? Most of them are history.

yep its the squatty McCulloch. i looked at it at a yardsale today, pulled the rope and she turned over,I paid $10 for it, I squirted a little gas in the carb this evening and she fired right up. it might be worth buying a gas tank for it after all LOL. i've never messed with the smaller outboards so any help is appreciated, thanks. the hood is not cracked, bottom of one decal is torn but still there...

Well, the hood is worth more than you paid for the whole motor. The carburetor/fuel pump on those things is a Royal PITA. There are two types, Tillotson and something else. Same PITA getting at the water pump on certain models.
