I have a 1983 Evinrude 115hp 20" Outboard.
I just added a 5" extension kit to it and now I have a problem.
Everything went together perfectly but i found the shift rod wouldn't budge so I took it all apart and found the rod screwed down so low it did not permit shifting (must be because the rod was threaded so far down it bottomed out on the case).
With the lower unit removed I loosened the shift rod just enough to permit me to hand shift from reverse to neutral to forward. Then I re-installed the lower unit and still the shift rod once hooked up seems to not move at all (can't shift into anything and I think the rod is not the correct length. ie: still too short).
I should have measured the original rod (while in reverse) right after I removed the lower unit and then made sure the rod+extension was exactly 5" longer so it mated up at the correct point with the longer casing.
My question is this: Is it possible to unscrew the shift rod a little at a time without removing the lower unit? It is getting back breaking to keep removing the lower unit and adjusting length. I can see the shifting rod but just wonder is there an access point to unscrew it a bit without dropping the LU?
Or, if not, can anyone tell me exactly what the length of the shift rod should be as measured as it leaves the top of the lower unit bushing? Please specify what gear position (reverse I would assume) the rod should be in when measured?
Would appreciate any help.
