Hey all
bubba here.
today a friend of mine gave me his dads old motor. There are no ID plates anywhere on the engine. I do not know year, model, engine size or anything and he doesn't either.
Someone gave it to his dad years ago. Engine fires. It seems to be in good shape for the shape it is in.

How do I figure out if I have a 9.5 or 9.9? Alos how do I figure out what the year of production. The only plate on the engine is the starting instructions on the motor bracket. One clue might be the spark plug size. barely legible but I think it is U? 4L.

Any ideas other than getting rid of my friend. He is worthless when it comes to information. His Dad has gone on to a bigger fishing pond. Not sure if he would answer my prayers anyway. might be to busy fishing.

Any ideas before I start the bubba overhaul.

Thanks

9.5 carb is on the side of the front. 9.9 carb is on the front of the block.

9.5 tiller will move down to vertical and a 9.9 won't. 9.9 has a black knob on the port side for adjusting slow speed, 9.5 doesn't. 9.5 has a long bent metal piece from choke to carb. that bends around the flywheel. Or you could always post a picture. Rick.

Thanks to all who responded.
Especially thanks to F_R. he was close by and came to visit and gave me a wealth of information on the motor.
