I have seen a few post about this subject, but didnt see much in the way of answers. Please help!
1973 Evinrude 65hp, starts, idols and revs fine, performed well at the house with the muffs on but when under a load (at the lake) it would not throttle up. Not sure which direction to go.

Thanks for your advise and help!!!!

If the spark and compression are OK, move on to the carbs as busted-bayliner suggested.

Well, today we go and test! I did a comp test and all were about 130ish (kinda hard to do it by myself) and the spark is good. Pulled the carbs and cleaned them really well. put them back on and it fired right up, and today we will be taking it out to see if it worked. I will post the results.

Well, good and bad. It is a 130 mile round trip, but it wasx a nice day for a drive. Got some more power from cleaning the carbs (very detailed this time) and so I was happy with that. I had forgot my spark tester at home, so I stopped along the way to the lake for another, and when I tested the spark with the new tester, I found out that at idle plenty of spark, but when throttled up and under load, the spark fizzled out. So new coil packs are ordered and should be here tomorrow. So with all of that said, I will post more results when I get the new ones in and can get back up to test it. Should be next week some time.

replaced the coils, not much better. I think the timing is probably screwed up and now the "energy pack" is not working right..... so instead of continuing to put good money after bed results, I have a buddy that rebuilds Mercs, so I am going to do a swap for a much newer (same HP). A couple of cases of specialty beer and my old motor for one from his shop (warrantied and guaranteed) so not a bad deal. So long J&E!!!!

should stick with johnson eveinrude parts are super abundant if ur dead set on gettin a merc good luck if spark was fizzin out on all thre cylinders the that would lead me to believe the stator or the power pack was goin bad 3 coils deff couldnt go bad at the same time just sayin keep a good thing not a fan of merc

Well, I'm gonna go to Mercury. They are way more prevalent in this area, and everyone (at the lake during testing) to go with Merc and had Mercs on their boats. And the 2 guys that had Evinrudes told me that they wished they had Mercs. And to top it all off, the guys at the Johnson/Evinrude shop were not at all helpful or customer friendly.
