Volvo manual lists a part number for the fuel filter on 3L GLP-E engine and I bought one today...got home and looked and I do not see one in the engine compartment...one I bought looks like an oil filter, but the only thing I see that resembles it is THE oil filter.

I see the fuel pump and the screen assembly...am I blind or does it only have the screen?

Thanks...I hope I am not losing my eyesight at age 31!

Re: Help finding fuel filter?

Which manual? I don't even remember Volvo's manuals having Filter numbers.
Was it a service manual, owners manual?
A manual number would be a big help. Usually found on the last page in the lower corner (could be left or right corner) but it is there.

Re: Help finding fuel filter?

It's the operator's manual that I downloaded from Volvo website in PDF format. It says it covers 3.0, 4.3, 5.0, 5.7, 8.1 engines, plus SX-A, DPS-A, XDP-B drives...page 65 lists all maintenance part numbers in chart form. On the line for 3.0 GLP-E it shows part # 3855104, which is what the authorized VP dealer gave me - looks like an oil filter (I know its not, obviously). Do you think it is a mistake on VP's part, or am I just missing it (it was getting dark when I looked)? Thanks for the continued help...I love this forum.

BTW I think the number you are asking about is VPA 7746499 ? It's next to a barcode on the last page. There is also the number SA-405 08? Hope this helps.

Someday I hope to have the knowledge and experience to offer others help!

Re: Help finding fuel filter?

You bought a fuel/water separator. Indeed they look like oil fiters and install the same. And they are recommended annual maintenance replacement items. But not all boats are equipped with them. I have no idea if yours is one of them...someone here might know. But next time you look (in daylight!) just follow the fuel line from the tank to the carburetor. Somewhere in-between you might find one of these things to replace. Or you might not.

My 92 Mercruiser 3.0L was not equipped with a fuel/water seperator, it just had an inlet screen a the carb and nothing else.

Re: Help finding fuel filter?

Your dealer gave you the wrong filter. The 3855104 is the one in the fuel pump. NOT a water seperating fuel filter. See picture below.
I would strongly suggest you get an aftermarket water seperating fuel filter and install it.
It will save you a lot of hassle with that fuel pump and carb filter later on.

Re: Help finding fuel filter?

You are correct, Don (as if there was ever any doubt). It bothered me so much I took a flashlight out and did a thorough search of the engine compartment...no separator...just the screen. Looking at the manual's engine diagram and a schematic obtained from Stingray.com, neither shows a separator. I will definitely look into adding one ASAP. An ounce of prevention...

Thank you Don S. and Craze1cars for your assistance.

Re: Help finding fuel filter?

The 3.0L engines NEVER came with a water seperating fuel filter. Not on Mercruiser, not on OMC and not on Volvo. Never have.
Who knows, maybe the new generation of EFI 3.0L engines will get them as OEM.

Re: Help finding fuel filter?

This thread was really helpful - now I know where my fuel filter is located. I wish I had better manuals, but it appears that all I have to do is undo the bolt on the bottom and then release that latch thingee?

I too am adding a water/fuel separator so that would mean fewer changes for the fuel filter right under the pump?
