My yard is totally invaded by fire ants it's so bad my pets are complaining.
I have been using a host of stuff from the Home Depot and various other gardening centers, they all have one thing in common. They don't work like they used to, in the past, two to three applications per year was sufficent.
I need some tips and advice here on how to get rid of those pesky ********.

How to get rid of fire ants:
1. fill your belly button with gasoline.
2. put the ants in the gasoline.
3. light it.
4. when the ants run out, stab them with an ice pick.

Hmmm! I see that you're somewhat of an intellectual and a maverick, :p i think i'll pass on your unorthodox method.

Re: HELP!!!! FIRE ANTS!!

What I do with pest ant colonies (I am a professional exterminator) is I locate all the colonies, and I use a long rod like tool, about 4 feet long with a bunch of holes along its length, and push it all the way into the ground. I turn on the pump, and slowly withdraw while pumping. It only takes like a gallon or so of chem to do the trick. Fire ants can be a lot of fun (I was stationed in Georgia, we were always getting messed up by fireants). I would say just get a pro, you'll spend less money and time, and our chem is a lot better, but if you insist on doing it yourself, try to get a product with Permethrin (it is a liquid that is fairly decent ecologically and has decent residual strength) in it, locate the colonies, and try to get it down in the colonies. Again, it would be cheaper and easier to just get a pro. Call around and see before you take my word. Good luck and don't get bit up...

I have had good luck with Ortho Fire Ant Killer - it's a white powder applied directly to the mound - think most Lowes have it. I have tried the broadcast stuff but it did not work well.

Boric acid works for roaches, would it work on fire ants too?

If moles will eat them, I got some moles for you!

SS

Re: HELP!!!! FIRE ANTS!!

I going along with jasonj advice since i've already tried the majority of off the shelf products from Lowes, Home Depot,Walmart and a few of the local garden centers in my area.
The maintenance guy at my work told me fireants are the best protection against termites, except the formosan species. is that true?

Re: HELP!!!! FIRE ANTS!!

hello
when I grew up in lower Al we had fire ants. when I lived in and around Cleburen TX we had bigger fire ants. I found the best killing method was to use staight chlorox bleach during the midday sun. use a long rod with holes and a good bug sprayer. use 1-2 gallons of bleach inside the mounds. the chlorine gas, while evaporating has a tendancy to do nasty things to the critters in the holes. other than that call a pro.
good luck and never use gasoline on them. it wont work anyway.

Try Amdro--It's a bait type pesticide. Kills the queen, kills the colony. Better than killing just some of them with gas, fire, hot water, bleach, firecrackers, acid, and it's safer.

Re: HELP!!!! FIRE ANTS!!

Baits can be a hit or miss proposition, unless a pro uses professional versions. The bait has to be tailored to species, and even then you can have difficulty. You can have one colony that will take the bait, and another colony six feet away that won't even look at it. Also, they may not necessarily eat the bait right away. Ants cache their food, and if there is a large amount already stored, it can take days, even weeks before they get to the bait that has been stored. The exception is liquid baits. Ants do not eat what they find. They take it back to the nest and give it to the larvae. The larvae converts all foraged food to a liguid that is regurgitated to the ant that comes to it. The ant palpates the larvae with its antenae and forelegs, which stimulates the larvae to regurgitate the liquid. It is this liquid that the ant lives on. The process is called Throsolaxis. The queen is tended by small ants that never leave the colony, and they bring her this food from the larvae. Liquids that foraging ants take in is brought straight to the larvae and is not stored, so a liquid bait can work faster. The chem in the bait has to be low enough to not kill the foraging ant or the larvae right away. It needs to be passed out like bad halloween candy, and it can take up to a few weeks for a bait to kill an average sized colony. The industry spends a lot of money and time on research to come up with a bait that the ants will take and consume. We spend a lot of money on our baits, and there is no such thing as one bait that kills everything. Storebought baits have a low percentage of effectiveness because of this. They try to make bait that all ant species will take, and it ends up that none takes it.

Re: HELP!!!! FIRE ANTS!!

I use a garden pesticide from Ortho called Orthene. Its a fine white powder all that is required is a half teaspoon of the powder sprinkled on the mound and it will kill the mound completely. The only draw back is the stuff smells like a rotten egg poot so I wouldn't use it anywhere near the patio or front porch. Other than that its good stuff.

Re: HELP!!!! FIRE ANTS!!

After having been in GA, SC, and NC, I've gone back to the basics. Environmentally friendly boiling water. After pouring a couple med pots of boiling water on the hill, they don't come back. Or they at least move to somewhere I don't know of. It's been working for me. No problem with ants now in my yard. I used grease from frying fish on one hill in the back of my yard. That worked but messy. Unfortunately for a mole, I spread some on his trail. Little sucker launched right out of the ground about a foot. Surprised the heck out of me.

I've had success with Amdro. It doesn't wipe them out immediately, but it does wipe them out permanently.

For short-term control I have used boiling water.

Good luck. :)

Re: HELP!!!! FIRE ANTS!!

UPDATE:
I contacted a local pest control company and they've treated my yard once so far, they will do two treatments in the month of January, and once every quarter thereafter for the rest of the year, the cost was $250.00
The contract is renewable at $110.00 yearly, and if i ever see one fireant on my property, all i have to do is make a call and they'll take care of it at no extra cost to me.
So far everything seems to be working out well,i happened to be at work when the job was done,so i don't know what chemical was used, but my understanding is it's environmentally acceptable and not harmful to pets. The residue has the appearance of brown sugar which dissipates after watering. When i find out the name of the chemical i'll post it. Thanks y'all, :)

My way of curing the fire ant problem I had in Florida was moving back to Ohio. :)
