Ok, here is my problem, can anyone help. I am really getting overwhelmed at this point and can't afford to lose anymore hair.

We purchased and old tri-hull last year with a 1973 Mercury 650 (65 hp) motor. We fished it many times after purchase with little problem. Then one day after my buddy left it uncovered and it rained, we seemed to run in a problem of it not "getting up". It was moving maybe 2-4 mph. My buddy kept gunning it thinking it may be a bad fuel spot and was trying to blow it out. Next thing i know the engine is extremely hot and something pops. We took off the cowl and let it cool. Nothing visibly wrong, it then ran fine for the rest of the day. Next weekend, we get it started right up, start to make our run and we lose power again, never to regain it. Motor started fine, idles fine, just complete lack of horsepower.
Ok fast forward after replacing the whole lower unit, impeller, propeller, everything. We also had the plugs replaced with new boots. We put it on the water, still no power. Boat is then put up for the winter.
Well, we pull the boat out this year and start looking the engine over. We immediately notice that the coil wire from the distributor cap is just shredded. We managed to save the distributor cap and remove all wires and replace all three spark plug wires and the coil wire. The boat is put on the water and has a little more power, maybe 5-8 mph, but no where near what it was before. We then adjust the shifter cable and the motor and now we are getting wake and the nose is in the air, but still lacking a little power and have lost reverse . Any suggestions?
