Good afternoon everyone...I'm trying to hard wire a set of controls to a Evinrude 1998 90hp. The controls look like the control that came with the boat..its a 1992 Nitro... The controls that are on the boat came with the big red plug, and another harness with 5 wires that look like they might be for the gauges. My problem is, I have about 8 wires with no home on the main harness. I have no idea where they go. I color matched each wire, but I can't fine a color match for about 8 wires on the main harness...I tried to take pictures of the wires that I need help with. Any help would be great.

Simply color matching wires from an "unknown" control box to those of a later engine is very risky. Just because the colors are the same does not mean they carry the same function. You need to determine the manufacturer of the control box (Tracker didn't design and build it). You then need a schematic for it and one for the motor. Only then can you safely do this. Go to your local library and look at a service manufal for your engine to determine what the wires are for. You then need to determine which wire is which on the controller. Open it up if you need to.

Looks like you got a mess on your hands. you need to get a factory manual and figure out what wires are for the TT, the neutral interlock, the ignition, the safety lanyard, the tach, overheat alarm. or you can get the proper harness and control box and be done with it, you can problably get one on ebay and then its plug and play. good luck on your journey and hope it works out for you.

Re: Help hard wiring a set of controls

Hey thanks for the reply.. I have the manual for the motor.. what I don't have is the manual for the controls. I assumed that all the wiring from a set of controls with a red plug operates the same way. I also assumed that when you but the adaptor, all they do is color code the wires. My issue is, I have more wires then what I can deal with. I know the Big red plug has eight wires...My motor harness has the two 6 pin adaptors with 6 wires each equaling 12, I have another harness that has 5 wires which I know they are for the gauges. ok, if I can find a color code for the gauges, to the color code to the engine side, I would be set... Oh the engine side, I have a white/purple stripe, Green/white stripe, Blue/orange stripe, Black/yellow stripe, Brown/black stripe, black/white stripe, brown/yellow stripe, for the gauges, I have Green, White/brown stripe, Red, Black and blue.

Your engine has the system check function. It will have indicator wires for overheat, low oil, no oil and check engine. They are usually tan with a tracer You probably have wires for the tilt gauge as well. Your service manual should help you ID them.

The engine wires that are standard for all controllers are fused power (red/purple), Grey (Tach signal), Purple (Ign accessory), ign killer (Black/yellow), Starter Solenoid (Yellow/red), Choke (Yellow/Black). Your control also likely has two more wires for trim up and trim down. That makes eight. Normally you would have ground(black) as well
