Re: HELP HELP HELP, 91 merc 60hp

Hello there! There is no way that you have your leg deep enough in the water for your pump to prime, let alone pump, in anything made by Tupperware. I'm new to iboats, and new to Merc's, (which is the reason I joined this forum, these old merc's are definitely not Johnnyrudes). You need to try running it on muffs, or in a 55 gallon barrel. If you don't have 1/2 of that leg submerged, it's not going to work for you. These guys here are good, listen to what they have to say.
Best Regards,

Re: HELP HELP HELP, 91 merc 60hp

saumon i am going to try your idea tomorrow, i havent done what yet as the plastic tube doesnt fit very well into the pump housing outlet. 76 canaventure, please note that when running the motor the inlet areas were submerged well over 4-6 inches using the rubbermaid container, sorry i said tupperware before. not to mention i have tried the muffs 7-8 times, and was afraid since my set only pumps water from one side, i better submerge the bottom end which i did. i read the drive shaft turns clockwise looking down, is this true, thats how i installed the impeller.

thanks saumon, is the plastic tube supposed to fit well into the housing? or should there be a rubber gasket? i think this may be my problem area. what was the 4 inch long rubber peice on the copper tube from? as far as i know this motor has never been apart

Putting the muffs on the LU while its off the OB will tell you if water is flowing from the intake to the pump. If I recall you already put a hose from the tube and it flowed out of the tale tell.

When you dunk the LU into a bucket of water, the water line has to be above the pump level, letting the water "fill" the LU to the pump.

So even with the muffs you still dont have a tale tell?

phil, i had the water above the water pump, with the muffs, still no tell tale. air is getting in somewhere, or i dont have a good seal between the copper tube and the pump housing. what was a simple pre-season thing, has become a major issue. perfect weather here to test the boat out, and i cant get the darn thing to pump!! im tempted to just go out in my aluminum with a 6hp johnson, but thats too easy!!

It's supposed to be more like a 2" plastic tube that you first put onto the pump outlet and, when you reassemble, you slide the copper tube in it.

Re: HELP HELP HELP, 91 merc 60hp

saumon, my pump housing is a bit different then the one in the picture you sent, the upper pump house has 3 bolts, 2 at the back, one at the front if your looking down. also the outlet on the housing is larger then the small plastic tube i was talking about. as well the thin metal plate and 2 gaskets have almost 2 half moon shapes cut into them, will this make any difference in trying your idea? as well piece number 23 the lower pump housing i could not get free, could there be an issue down there? i didnt want to break the plastic.

also i am getting a lot of exhaust out of the area behind the pump, peice number 13 on that drawing, above the planing board of the bottom end. also, how does the water get to the exhaust ports just below the cowling? i have lots of water sputtering out of there while motor is running. but the tell tale is only steam, and a drop of water every second or 2.

What's your serial #? With the right number, we'll be able to have the right diagram.

Saumon, the serial number is A717699 made in Canada. i have tried to look this number up and could not find anything. i just put the bottom end together again, with that plastic peice pushed into the outlet of the pump housing, fired it up with the muffs on, and i get an occasional sputter of water out the tell tale, but still no good flow.

Re: HELP HELP HELP, 91 merc 60hp

thanks saumon, the guy i bought it off of said it was a 1991 he installed in 1991 new when he bought the boat, which is a 1986. so hes a lier, haha. O.k well according to that info i have everything in line, but it doesnt show the copper tube. or the plastic peice on the copper tube, or the rubber peice on the copper tube for that matter. im just going to remove the lower unit again, see if the impeller is still in one peice. this has got to be the most frustrating thing i have ever done. i have rebuilt numerous motors, without a glitch, and this water pump has me stumped, not fun!

Re: HELP HELP HELP, 91 merc 60hp

also would you know any tricks to get that bottom pump plate off? i am afraid to break the plastic, but i would feel better if i knew all the seals where ok under it. i have the entire seal kit i might as well use it. i tried to ply it with a slotted screw driver, but its really on there, not very easy to get at. i figured it would pop lose and slide up off the 3 bolts, but thats not the case.

Just a tought: are you getting the right impeller? The right one for a 1986 is Merc. 89983 or Sierra 183007.

If you ordered it for a 1991, maybe you get Merc. 19453 or Sierra 188900.

Re: HELP HELP HELP, 91 merc 60hp

saumon,
when i got the impeller i gave them the serial number and said it was a 1991, they never once said "oh by the way that serial number doesnt match up with 1991." either way, im gonna drop her off tomorrow to get rebuilt by a pro. im hoping they can get the bottom of the pump housing off and put the new gaskets in that i already have. my gasket kit matched up perfect, so the impeller must have been right, it all came together. its annoying when you know the problem but cant or are too pissed off to fix it. i know if i get at it again i will break something, that bottom housing peice is really stuck, at least if they break it i can blame them and not myself, laugh out loud. but thanks for all your help!! if it wasnt for you, i would still think its a 1991.

Re: HELP HELP HELP, 91 merc 60hp

wow after such a go at her, i broke down. I bought a entire new water pump, impeller, seals, etc... motor pees like a racing horse!! took it out tonight for the first run in my new boat and i was like a kid in a candy shop, that 60hp really goes on a fiberglass 15 foot bow-rider. Turns out i tried cleaning the housing, sanding the burnt rubber off the insides, etc... $75 for the entire kit and its done, took 20minutes to throw in and re-mount the lower unit. i will say this, after re-building i threw on the muffs, and only got an odd sputter out of the tell tale, i was worried. so i threw her in my rubber maid container and she shot 8 feet across the laneway. i wont use single side muff setup again!!

Glad everything is fine! And, as a bonus, you're now very efficient at removing and replacing the L/U ;)
