Take a look a this - it is a big boat and it is aluminum. Put a nice diesel motor in it and your good to go!

Project Aluminun Boat

No engine, listed at $4200, with a sign on the side $3995, a giant white monkey included in the sale.....??????

Oh man I feel like a monkey just looking at that ad:stupid::monkey::madgrin::upset:

Why not buy the book and build it yourself? Lofting is not a big deal and scarfing plywood is a pretty simple endeavor. Stitch-n-glue is a pretty forgiving technique too. Dropping $5k for CNC parts seems a bit silly to me for a S-n-G boat. By its nature, S-n-G allows the builder to make "close enough" downright pretty. If I were in your shoes (hope they are 13-wide), I would drop the $125 on a full set of plans for that Glacier boat, buy Sam Devlin's book on S-n-G boat building (I assume you have Tolman's book already), call RAKA Epoxy and start looking for deals on 1088 Okoume plywood. May take you a bit longer, but given the description of what the CNC kit provides you, it appears that you really do not gain much by buying the kit. As I see it, the only thing you gain is not having to cut out the hull and chines (You are still going to have to wire the hull and chine whether you buy the kit or loft your own). Also, do not forget that quite a few people have built Tolmans and should be able to help you out if needed. Plus twin 150s are gonna cost you. :faint2:

Just my $0.02...

those are nice looking boats and no doubt seriously seaworthy. one Q i had when i've looked at SnG boats is the relatively crude hull shapes you are stuck with due to the inability to bend plywood into too complex a shape, with the attendant effects on ride. this is a common and valid criticism of alum boats as compared to glassers, and plywood takes it a bit further. i'm also a mite skeptical about their claims that a ply boat is lighter than an equivalent alum one.

silly ad and all, i bet that 26'er is pretty negotiable. as you know, tin hull is rebuildable to be essentially new boat. convince the guy to sell it to you for much less and find a badly rear ended Dodge truck with the Cummins turbodiesel.......??? and with the white gorilla suit, the elk would never know what was sneaking up on em...."oh don't worry about THAT, Myrtle, it's just another damn Sasquatch..."

I got devlins book and about to buy Renn's. I think I would go with the 24' Jumbo for $3500, first boat I think I would go with the kit.
Recommended hp is 115hp-150hp, I would go with twin 60hp Etec outboards. i will check out RAKA epoxy.
In the process of fixing my diesel truck at the moment, fuel tank leaking at the fuel sender gasket, top tank.
I will keep an eye on that Medford boat and if the guy will come down on the price I might just have to go take a look at her.
I like the idea of diesel power boat, direct drive. However 1 engine does not drive well in tight quarters. I am a cummins fan, love twin 4b in a 26'. Since I want in floor fish box and below deck fuel tanks I would go with twin O.B., try to construct with self bailing deck.
Keep looking and I appreciate the help.

I agree with the idea of the 26'-er being negotiable. No way that boat is worth the $4k asking price. Might be worth a look-see. If it has good bones, drop 25 Benjamins on the hood of his truck and see what he says. Another $2-3k in refurb and you have a finished hull for close to the price of a 26' Tolman kit. At the very least, make the seller tell you no.

You know what you should really thinking, Marinette. Way beefy compared to the smaller/lighter Starcraft.

Ironically, I probably see 10 Marinettes to every 1 26' Starcraft I see:

1971 32' Marinette

Marinette 32 ft Fisherman ***PRICE REDUCED*** May Consider Trade

Free Well 28' Marinette all aluminum cabin crusier

28' 1969 Marinette 260 Hp. Express Soft Top

1972 32Ft Marinette Flybridge Cuddy

1982 Marinette 28'

1973 Marinette express cruiser 28 foot

1974 28ft Marinette Hardtop Express aluminum fishing boat

There are plenty of 32' out there (too big really), the 28' version is a little more rare.

I sure wish this one were closer...

1971 Marinette 28'/ For parts / Scrap

Gosh, I might just need to cough up a bid on this one...

You know what you should really thinking, Marinette. Way beefy compared to the smaller/lighter Starcraft.

I have spent countless hours (in the way way back) on a Marinette aluminum cabin cruiser. Buddy's boat. Helped w/ the rehab/refurb and slow rework over many spring & fall seasons. Enjoyed being aboard April - Sept for many years.

Roughly 8X8 deck at the stern, standing pilot station under a fairly large hardtop. Small dinette, tiny sink & prep area for a kitchenette w/ a 1cu ft or less fridge, small lounge that converts into a TINY bunkbed, v-berth cabin at the bow, head compartment w/ macerator toilet, and 2nd helm station just behind that port side foremost windshield.

It was a 28ft if I remember correctly very similar to this:
00T0T_hXj5YMX3PS1_600x450.jpg

Completely sanded from the waterline up in it's slip at a marina in KY. Old fireball 8 was a royal pain, inboard, fixed shaft prop w/ a rudder.

Displacement hull as I remember. It was built like a tank...... Good times, great memories....

I sent the guy an e-mail on the 26' fixer upper project boat asking a few questions. I told him 4k was too much my wife gave the ok for 2k. Waiting for his reply and if all goes well more pictures.

That is a prime example of a trailer too short for the boat.

Although based on the pix it may not be quite a 25ft, seems small compared to the pix of Jas new boat.

agree 100%, no way that's a 25. and way overpriced even given West coast pricing. doubt you could even put a 25 on non-tandem trlr. VERY interesting solution to broken windshield, tho....you can see it originally had the curved-plexi one. looks like the lower one is slightly too large.

Jas is right. Marinette and a possible road trip. I'd drive 800 miles for a boat I really wanted. Luckily I live right next to Lake St. Clair and I've got tons of tin to pick from. I'd drive to 2-3 days before I spent 2 years building a boat. Buy the bigger boat and do more fishing. I've never heard an old guy say "I wish I'd done less fishing in my life". If you can afford it go for it.

Boats For Sale

If you build a boat I'm going to watch you. I dream about building a cool wooden boat. I'd do a powered catamaran. However it would seriously cut into my fishing time. It would be priceless though.

Keep us posted.

you make a good point, about both time and money. the time/$ you spend getting it will be DWARFED by the time/$ you spend restoring it, so might as well get the one you really want. my holiner cost me $300 to bring home; i now have probably between 5 and 6 thou in her and would probably have been far better off driving to PHX or CenTex and buying a real Mariner.........

Buy the bigger boat and do more fishing. I've never heard an old guy say "I wish I'd done less fishing in my life".

the tradeoff, and one that i'm painfully aware of as i contemplate retirement poverty, is that the cost of fuel will likely be the single biggest limitation on how much one can fish. in the portabote, i can usually bring home a pound of fish for every gallon i burn. i'll have to go to a 4 stroke trolling motor to do that in the Holiner
