I pulled the screw under the emblem (no emblem was there and it was TOO tempting). the inside piece did NOT fall down but did slip back some before I caught it. Is there a way to "fish" it back without having to pull the drive?????

If not, (DON) is it any easier to just pull the lower part of the drive vs the whole drive??

Nope, that plate is stuck in the upper, and you have to fish it out through the water passage.

Howdy,

If you cannot "fish" it out....... you MUST pull the drive and hold the nut plate in place while you put the "Never-Remove" screw back.

If you haven't pulled the drive before, you should anyway so you can check the alignment. U-joints and gimbal bearing.

Regards,

Rick

oh......sorry about that......my name's not Don!.....and I cannot type anywhere near as fast as him anyway;)

Re: Help...I removed the NEVER remove screw.

k.. I "fished" the plate out. Now I relize I can go thru the water passage and "wedge" it in place while I install the screw and plan on doing that on a better day. just a question, I have seen on several post where people have replaced this with just a rubber plug ( like an expanding rubber plug, the type with a screw in it that expands it out). I know this is NOT the correct way to fix this, but would this work? I really want to "lake test" my boat before season and wonder if this is an option for that?

You might as well pull the outdrive, and get used to it. It's part of the yearly maintenance. You MUST pull the outdrive to grease the splines for the coupler, and check your alignment. Without it, you will be pulling the outdrive so you can pull the engine to replace the coupler. Your choice.

Re: Help...I removed the NEVER remove screw.

I actually did the outdrive yearly maintance durring the winter layup (as I do every year, been boating a long time and learned a little bit of maintance saves alot of money, and I am pretty vigilant about my maintance) Just for knowalage I did manage to get the screw and "nut" back in place (2 hours fight for a stupid mistake on my part) by siliconing the "nut" in place long enough for me to start the screw. The screw head now is wearing a nice cap of j.b. weld on it's head so the next owner won't make the same stupid mistake.

I'll betcha someone would scrape the JB weld off and and STILL pull the screw............JUST BECAUSE IT'S THERE!!:p:p

glad ya got it back in but dont use an expanding rubber plug there as it cuts down the water flow , tried that once ...

Wanna make SURE it gets removed? Paint it bright red, and have a sticker made to put over the top of it that says - DANGER! DO NOT, under ANY circumstances, REMOVE THIS SCREW! -

I give it 15 mins...TOPS...before its out.

And at that point, if the person removes it without finding out why all those warnings are there. Then he deserves his sign. Here it is.

Re: Help...I removed the NEVER remove screw.

It came off (inside) but it did not slide out of reach. What it is there is a "nut" (actually a threaded plate) that NORMALLY (when you remove the stupid screw in a moment of stupidity) slides down a water passageway out of human reach (hence the need to remove the drive and "shake/retrive" it out.

Is there a "Never Remove Screw" on an OMC 800? If so, where is it so that I can avoid it?

Repeat after me: NEVER TOUCH A SCREW THAT IS NOT A FLAT HEAD SCREW OR IS OR WAS UNDER A DECAL OR EMBLEM.
