Hello BBoarders!

I am trying to identify the year of what I believe to be a 1957, 58, or 59 35HP Javelin.

I cannot find a model number, but have a serial number from the freeze plug: 1538197

The year is important because it seems to govern the choice of impeller. Are there any other clues you can suggest?

Thanks.

Re: Help ID a 35hp Javelin

Welcome to Iboats, Cayenne!

Fortunately, it's easy to identify the year of 35hp outboards.

The '59 will be white and grey, with a fiberglass & metal hood.

The ''57 will be mostly red with a white trim on the hood.

The '58 will be white with a metal hood with gold trim if it's a RD(ES)-20, or if it's a RD(ES)-19C, it's mostly red with a white metal hood with red trim.

Hope that helps!

(The RD-20 takes a different impeller than the RD-19C, although they're both '58 )

Re: Help ID a 35hp Javelin

Thanks Paul!

Here's the thing, the lower unit is white, and the cover is white with red trim.

It's entirely possible that this is a repaint, or even a swap. Some genius has painted the chrome trim with silver paint, too!

So I am looking for internal/serial number clues.

The plate that should show model number is missing!

Hmmm, I wonder if it might be a 59 unit with a 58 cowl?

A metal cowl won't fit a '59. So it's either a '57 or a '58. To answer the question at hand though - which impeller you need - is very simple. If there is a thermostat in it, you need a '58-59+ impeller and if you don't you need the '57-58 impeller.
If you look at the head where the spark plugs screw in, on the starboard there may be a long pipe running down the side of it capped by a cover held in place with three screws. Also the midsection of the thermostat variety is made in two parts - an inner and a shell - and looks a lot "fatter". That type takes the '58-59 impeller.
Normal Midsection ('57)
Superquite, thermostat engine midsection ('58)

And here's a '58 RD-19C

There is hardly, perhaps no any difference between a RD-19C ('58 ) and a RD-19 ('57) so you're going to have to go on paint if it comes down to that.

Many years of Johnsons with white lower units fit your 35hp, so it's likely a replacement. Manual shift 40hp, and 28 & 33hp engines up to the mid 70s all fit.

This should be very helpful thanks a billion!

I'll have to go check the unit in the shop, but I thinks it is the narrower midsection.

HEY good news! I scraped off some paint to reveal the plate after all! It was painted over.

THe unit is an RJE-19. A true 1957. Thanks!
