I am so happy I found a forums that covers these motors! I need HELP!!! =)

I recently bought a ted wiliams 7.5 outboard motor off a guy that wanted to get rid of it. He "said" it was working recently and wanted to sell it because the pull cord broke and he didn't want to fix it. I replaced the pull cord in about 30 minutes and tried to fire her up... guess what? No luck. Only had spark off one plug.

I would really like to get this working again (12' john boat waiting to go fishing) but the ID plate is scratched/painted up. I believe someone worked on this recently as there is new plugs in it, painted, and a couple other little things. I know where everyone here is getting parts from, but I NEED A MODEL NUMBER!!!!!

the engine looks ALMOST EXACTLY like this one I found on youtube EXCEPT the location of the plugs are on the same side with the plug wires; they dont wrap in front.

there is a good view at 3:54

Thank you all for sharing your knowledge!

Re: Help ID/fix Ted Williams 7.5 outboard

wow, thanks for the info!

I took the plugs off, removed the rubber end and held the wire up against the housing and it was sparking when turned over. I also grabbed an old chainsaw plug that I know works and popped it on the end (after I put it back together) and still no spark. Any ideas for what plug this motor takes? I was reading about 15-18 volts on my meter, but no spark on the plugs.....

If I contact discount marine parts, would they be able to help identify the powerhead with numbers off the housing? There are a few numbers on the crankcase that are legible, but the ID panel on the outside is painted over...

I am on the edge with this motor, I dont know if it would be worth my time/money to fix, or just get a different one that works... Id like the engine if it ran well......

ALSO a secondary question.... on the handle (sorry for improper terms here) the part that twists to advance the spark.... that is ALL it does, there is no cable or throttle to increase engine rpm that I know of. It advances the spark and then for 270 degrees doesn't do anything except rotate with no resistance. Is something else broken or is that how its supposed to be?

Again, thank you very much for your help. I would not be attempting to do this without your guys' help.

Tape off all around the number tag, spray tag with paint stripper, wash paint off with water. ( and a plastic scraper) Then you can read the tag.
