I bought the boat and motor for $500 a year ago It has a 1989 88 spcl Johnson, it looked completley rebuilt everything was clean new hoses, clamps no crosion on motor and paint looked new, as well as freez plugs. I called the local reccomended shop they quoted me $850 parts and labor which included a new prop shaft, seals and water pump. I asked him about taking my shaft to a machine shop to fix it and he said he wouldnt trust that because if it was out a thousands it would ruin the bearings. But I could get a used one for around $150 if he had a match, which would lower my cost.

Before I made any decision I tested the compression which read 120psi on all 4 cyl. Is that avg. or good? I thought It was good but dont know what the specs are.

Well I decided to do it myself after I get the Original manual. Where is the best place to find one?? I am a novice outboard mechanic, but have worked on cars for 20 yrs (shady tree mechanic). Should I let the pros do it or follow the manual take pictures and do it myself? Alos where is the best-cheapest place to get the seals and water pump?? Thanks for any input.
