Help! I'm totally stumped with my 40 horse Evinrude

I've posted a couple threads here and all of them have been very helpful. Unfortunatly I still can't get my darn motor to run.

I have a 1991 Evinrude 40 horse VRO that I can't keep running. I can keep it going with the choke but if I let off it the thing dies in about 5 seconds.

I've cleaned out the carbs 3 times, I'd eat out of them at this point. I've tuned the carbs all the way to the point of the needle valve almost falling out but it still won't keep running. I've checked the fuel pump but it seems to be working just fine (it keeps the bowl full of fuel). My floats are set in the correct position (the bowl stays a little better than half full). I have run out of ideas as to what the problem could be.

It will stay running at WOT but I don't like to leave it at WOT for too long if it's not in gear. Even at WOT it eventually stalls if the RPM's drop even a little.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be so incredibly thankful. I've been working on this motor most every day since last tuesday and I desperatly want it to run by the weekend. Thanks again.

Oh boy. I just screwed up.

Ok, I'll try to explain as best I can.

On the bowl of the carb there is a 7/16 screw in the very bottom. Upon removing that screw there is a set screw that appears to control how much fuel can reach the tube that the venturi sucks fuel from. I was thinking that perhaps there was a clog there since the carb cleaner I had sitting in it managed to strip out even more stuff (yes, I pulled and cleaned them again). Unfortunatly the set screw is made of a relativly soft brass and when I tried to remove it I managed to strip the head off it.

Now the set screw is jammed halfway out of the second se of threads. I can't get to to go forward or backwards. I'm either going to have to drill it or get a new bowl (WTF, I'll get a set of them and replace them both).

Poo. Just my luck.

Anyway, if someone here could point me in the right direction to get replacement parts for this little thing I would love you forever and ever and ever.

Once again, thanks everyone, this board has been a very, very great resource. I've learned tons since I started on this motor and I promise I will stick around to offer any help I can in the future.

Might ask around to see if anyone has a junk 40 that you could buy the carbs off of.
