i pulled the power unit off to check the impeller. when i pulled the housing the impeller vanes were bent and was real tight in the housing. how much play should there be, the impeller looks new and the former owner said he replaced it last year. i know it's not pumping water because there is none coming out.
thanks sam

Re: HELP impeller problem

The impeller is larger than the pump housing and runs off center in it. Thus the vanes are bent on one side and fairly straight on the other. With age, they take a permanent set. You can't see that with the pump housing off the lower unit but if you look closely inside the housing you will see that the drive shaft hole is off center.

If the impeller looks new and it is not pumping water, first be sure that the drive key is in place. If all looks well, some of these engines need a LOT of water on muffs to get any pumping out the relief in the back. Set the hose so that a lot of water is coming out around the muffs. Even then, some engines seem to take a long time to start spraying out water.

Also make sure the water "tube" is seated properly into the pump housing, and not broken or stopped up with debris.

Re: HELP impeller problem

I'm a rookie here, but I noticed that I when I submerged the motor just above the water intakes, it didn't seem to spit water, but when I raised the water level a few inches higher (above the water pump I suppose), I started spitting pretty quickly. Not really sure why it matters, and I still plan on replacing the impeller, but that's what I saw.
