Re: help in deciding a fuel flow monitor

Probably the cheapest one is made by NorthStar. I have one on my boat and it does great for fuel flow, having said that I have been trying to figure out how to make it work right. It is supposed to read the total gallon, used fuel etc, but I am at the point point I don't depend on it except for the fuel burn rate.
Any on them are simple installation, there is a small flow thing that goes in the fuel line and an electric wire that goes to the dash for the gauge.
Some of the new motors have it built in, but they charge you an arm and leg to hook it up even though it is already there.
Plane on couple hundred $$$

Re: help in deciding a fuel flow monitor

I've owned two Northstar units and they work well. Use of the total gallons used requires nothing other than stepping through the menu. Unless you reset it when you refill, the total per trip will be wrong -- just like the fuel monitor in your car. Tell it how much fuel you put in and it will tell you how much you have left at any given time.

Hookup requires power and ground to the head unit. The transducer mounts in the fuel line with a fuel filter ahead of it. Failure to add that filter will destroy the transducer (turbine wheel) if any dirt or debris passes through it. The transducer should be mounted vertically and shock mounted. A cable runs from the transducer to the head unit.
