Hello wise boaters. I am a new user since yesterday and i have been reading and reading the valueable information this forum has to offer. first off...i cant afford the expensive boats. so i am looking for something cheap but that will still meet my needs.

I've been reading about how most say bayliner and force are cheap and i want to take it a step further and ask you boaters out there about your opinion on a 23 footer walkaround cuddy cabin, its a fine lookng boat. if it was up to looks and price i would buy it right off the bat. but it has twin force 120s. Please let me know what you think about it. (good or bad) your wise words will ultimately make me decide on buying it or looking for another.

ipaste a picture to show u what i was talking about.

Re: HELP- is a 91 23' bayliner trophy, WA, cuddy good boat??

I got an 1802 new in 1994....broke ring on number 2 cly of my 90 hp two weeks ago. up till then it was great for 7 years. Frankly are you buying the boat to make us/these people happy or you? My boat is good for what I do and I have found that the fish don't care. Bayliner did make a bad boat in the 80s but they have come a long way ...too bad they are still stuck with that "bad boat" rep.. If you are buying to sell it in a year or two then the fact that it is a bayliner and has force on it could cost you because of the rep.

On the motors a used motor is a used motor could be good forever or last a week no matter what it is. Check the comp on them and the lower units for water look them over good for signs of being hot.. Then good luck.

BBQ,

Eat more fish pretty much said it all. It's an OK boat. Just make sure she's structurally sound. Make sure there aren't any soft spots in the floor. Check the transom for soundness. Just knock on it. A sharp knock is OK a dull thud means rotten wood.

As far as the engines go, if the compression is good, have them serviced by changing the lower unit lube and install new water pump impellers. The lower unit fluid that comes out (old) will tell the story on the condition. If you have the work done, I would suggest you be present when the lube is dropped.

After that, ask to run it. If it performs OK, go for it.
Don't expect a great resale price particularly with those engines.

Lets,
Somethin' else to take a look at:
Tilt engines up and push/pull down on lower units and look for movement or flex in the transom. Also look at outboard engine clamps and see if they "squish" in while yanging down on l/u's. Don't forget to kick the tires.

G'luck & c/6

hooty

Howdy Bar b q. I hate it when someone asks if a used B'liner powered by Force is a good boat. Eat more, Hooty and DJohns are being gentle with you.

Bayliners are beautiful boats, but they are poorly designed and built. They will not tolerate neglect or abuse. If a used one has had excellent care it is a good boat and a great value. If not it will be the greatest misery of your life.

Force engines are 1950s technology. They are easy to work on which is good because you are likely to need to work on them.

Reselling a Bayliner with Force power requires finding an inexperienced or a very experienced boater. . . one doesn't know what he is getting and the other knows how to make it work anyway.

That is a sharp looking boat and I'm sure the price is right. Nevertheless, I recommend something that needs less experience and expertise from its Skipper.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

 the bayliner trophy realy is a great boat, make sure you get a good deal and check the compression on the force and run it till it dies as long as you flush it every time you use it and keep it oiled it should last you a long time.

Re: HELP- is a 91 23' bayliner trophy, WA, cuddy good boat??

wise boaters, i appreciate you guys not tearing me up or making feel like a kindergartener in the corner. hey wassup djohn19.

I did make the run out to the twin set up bayliner. djohns19 and hooty, i checked the hull and it looks good throughout and the transom is soild. i even kicked the tires and rocked the outboards. so far so good.

the engine started and sputtered, but i was not able to test the compression. you guys recommend taking it for a test drive or getting my tools to check the lower unit and check compression?

one last thing, JB COrnwell, when you say poorly designed and built. i live here on the Gulf coast between TX and LA. I've been 40 miles offshore on my buddies 1984 25 Mako CC. its a nice soild ride. i love the luxury of a center console when it comes to fishin. u can walk all around and have plenty of room for casting or fighting the fish. but one thing is, the ladies hate it.so do the kids. but i hate the openess when its come to getting to the fishin spot or getting out of the weather when its 100 degrees out or when a storm is approaching.

will i be geting the same quality ride as the mako? will the trophy take the waves smoother because of the cuddy cabin set up?

makofanatic.? u might know. please remember i dont plan on being out there when its rough... just be there when its sunny and nice. but i do want to be prepare in case i get caught. please let me know -- i've been shopping around and am itching to purchase

one last thing. i really care for the hull. the engine. i can live with it for now because i was looking into purchasing new engines from the guy on www.boats.net have any of you looked at it yet? what do you think of the deal? is it a trick? he's offering no interest until 2003. no down payment. he quote me for twin yamaha 4-stroke 115 for 6400-6600. could this be true? i think i have to start a new post on this one and ask everyone. goto his website and check it out. but is the warrantly service good for me in texas. he is in florida. can you guys shed some light on this...

The pictures are of two boats. One only has one motor, different bow rail, antenna's, different color canvas, etc. plus the different paint job.

Re: HELP- is a 91 23' bayliner trophy, WA, cuddy good boat??

Yes you want to test the comp on a warm motor.
Look at the plugs they can also tell you a story about what's going on if one is wet that cylinder may not be firing. Check the color of the oil in the lower units. If there is flakes of metal on the lower plug when you check it run. If it's a milky white it has water in it but most likely can be rebuilt for <500.
If water or rusty water comes out then oil...run.
Hey don't buy or not buy based on what I say.
It is you that has to be happy with the boat not me or these other guys.
Just like anything used (and some new) it's a roll of the dice.

Check it over like a ********** for crabs. You don't want to end up with someone elses problems

No problem. Anyboat you look at it's the same steps. Just because it's a _____ <put any boat in blank> does not mean it's good or bad
