50:1 is correct; 2-stroke oil is usually blue or blackish blue or greenish and 50:1 premix is a noticeable color; 1974 according to

Did they tell you not to run the motor without either submerging the lower unit or attaching a water hose flusher? Not to rev it up without the lower unit submerged?
Do you know how old the fuel is or if its been treated with stabil or seafoam or similar? That's a great motor but it will be sensitive to stale fuel.
Any maintenance history on the motor? If you don't know when the last water pump impeller change was, best go ahead with it now, and every 2 or 3 years. Also a compression test would be a good idea, gives you a baseline for future diagnostics.
