Re: Help me decide between these two...quickly (please)

I just checked on Craigs list and there were fewer boats in this size and price range than normal, but there were better options than these two. Don't buy anything because you think you need to right now, you still have time before it gets warm enough to enjoy some warm weather boating in the PNW.

Wait until the right combination of boat and motor show's up at a good price. If you don't get the right package for what you want to do, you'll be out shopping again soon, or at least wishing you could afford to. The motor is a huge part of the package, so don't skimp, or think you'll upgrade later at a reasonable price, motors cost big bucks when purchased without a boat.

When shopping on Craigs list I always narrow it down to exactly what I want, or at least a couple of options, then check it every hour or so and be ready to head out immediately when whatever I'm looking for is posted.

One thing that eveyrone forgets to mention is your tow vehicle. Are you going to keep it in a slip or trailer it. IF you plan on trailering it whats your limits on your TV? Thats going to be a critical factor in anything that you decide to buy.

I would steer clear of Force motors. Call you local boat dealer/mechanic and ask. They have a really bad reputation.

Hi Lodger,

From PA and just purchased my second boat in the last 3 years. Here is my advice.

First, I agree with much said above. I lean towards outboards and therefor the Glastron becuase of the ability to change, the power to weight ratio is better, they are easier to service and you have a longer boating season, at least here where it can freeze in October.

The Force is an issue, its never going to get much respect from the mechanics and I have heard the earlier ones were actually better. I am not an expert, but something about the mix of Mercury and Chrysler technologies.

A few musts, first, before you even consider putting money down, you must get a boat inspection from a qualified marine mechanic. They will check the motor out for you, they will look at the compression of the cylinders, the condition of the lower unit, the spark, the fuel lines and so forth. This process usually costs about 100.00 but is well worth it. This is actually my last step of the buying process, assuming it checks out in other areas, it has saved me thousands. The boat I just purchased was listed for 5000.00, NADA was 3100.00 so right there I showed this to the seller, he agreed to 3000.00 Took the boat to the mechanic, and like the Force your looking at it was used like once in 4 years. This is not good for the carbs and steering, lack of use actually can creat more problems. The boat has a 1993 Evinrude 115, which needs a total carb rebuild (400.00), Steering needs to be freed up and or cable kit replaced (200 - 400). The water pump is a must change out becuase of age/sitting (150)....tires dry rotted, lights out and so forth....I told the seller, no deal at 3000.00, I would go 2350.00.....The boat is at the shop now, all in, I will have a nice 1993 Sunbird/Evinrude 115 for around 3200.00.

Before making any offers, take a hard look at the floors of a boat, take don't be afraid to thump all areas with the back of a screwdriver or small trim hammer. Not hard to dent it, but hard enough to find out if thier is any rot. Half the boats I looked at were starting to rot out. There is usually a plywood floor under the carpets. It does not matter what brand of boat, if it is left wet allot, the floors will start to rot out.

Look at the covers/canvas, these are expensive to replace, make sure its in good shape, no tears and so forth.

Good luck with everything....feel free to ask any questions, I am glad to help.

i agree with the chief. a nicer boat with more giddyup. it will be hard to get a skier up with this set up.
