the 3.0 engine is marginal on a 17 foot boat, that thing would have to run wide open all the time, to keep that boat on plane, if it planes at all.

this means the engine will be working full out ......drinking gas..

some times its better to go bigger to use less gas.

on a side note....the hatch in the cuddy leaks.......

but as said above.....keep looking.....

some things to watch out for.....stay away from most boats called bayliner...

(disclaimer......while some bayliners, if well cared forare fantastic boats....on the most part with only marginal upkeep...they can pose a potential problem to an unsuspecting buyer

and any drive that says omc

try to find a fresh water boat as well.....however a boat in that style will be tough to find in fresh

I agree that you should keep looking. One thing in particular that caught my attention on the Bayliner (and I own a Bayliner), was the floor area in this picture:

I had one of those.. it was a real good fishing boat.. but it had a volvo penta with a V8 (305 chevy).. it pushed it real well. The 3.0 would not push that boat very well at all. If you are still considering it.. take it for a water test to see how the power is.

If fuel economy while fishing/trolling is your concern, you could get a boat with plenty of power, then put a little kicker motor (6 hp) on bracket and use the little motor while trolling.

Anyway, those bayliner trophy boats are easy to come by and you'll find many more just like it that has adequate power.

Looking at my father's 1975 Silverline 21ft cabin cruiser it seems to be a well built boat. It also needs interior work. When looking at the prices of these silverline boats, I've seen them priced higher some even $13000 or better. I haven't found anybody that knows much about Silverline boats, even on this website, I'm no expert but Silverline seems to be a decent boat. My father's Silverline has a mercruiser V8, can't remember what outdrive though. If I remember right comparing his silverline to his recently purchased 21ft 1972 Bayliner liberty (project boat) the silverline seems to have more head room in the cabin, the bayliner is a shorter boat seems to be more cramped space in other words it lacks the space. I know the issue seems to be the outdrive on the silverline, I personaly have no clue on what the omcs are like. But if you find another silverline with a different outdrive it might be worth looking into.

Here is a pic of the 2 boats I'm talking about, Silverline on the right, bayliner on the left. Granted I know the bayliner I'm talking about is older then the one your looking at.

I did consider the Bayliner and thought of making the trip. The guy was even going to give it to me for $4200. Then today he calls me and tells me that one of the cylinders has 60psi of compression while the rest have 130. He said they would fix the problem which was the cylinder head. I declined his offer and will keep on looking.

If anyone sees a nice looking 21-25ft Hardtop, feel free to contact me . There's not as many up for sale as I'm hoping for. My price range is up to about $5000-$6000. I think I need to change the thread title to "Help me find a boat"

Just some Newb advice here. Take what these guys tell you seriously they know what they are talking about. Dont rush and take your time $6,000 will get you alot of boat if you are patient. I like the one you posted last the best but be sure to contact the owner and have him disclose everything about the boat/trailer before you take a trip like that.

Well, I thought of giving you guys an update. I talked to the guy with the 24' and it appears to be a really good boat. After the considerations I will be taking a trip and will be buying it. I found a few here in Michigan and most are 21' Trophies and a few 24' Thompson a few years older but about $2,000 more than this one. I think this is a lot of boat for the money considering that I sold my 16ft. Starcraft for $2,900. Thanks for the help.

hard tops are less common, but be patient, the right will come along.
A couple years ago my dad lucked into a 10 y.o 26' Thompson....absolutely cherry....$10K

My bad in thinking you were getting the 4 cyl. The photos on craigslist didn't work for me.. but good job! Now that boat will move really well with the V8 and if that engine were to go out, you can find longblocks for that engine for like $1500. they make an attachment for the swim platform where you can mount a little kicker motor onto it... so, if you are trolling and want to use less gas, get a little kicker motor (6 to 10hp) and mount it on the back and you can troll cheaply..
