Hi Scaupman,
Your motor is a 1955. The model number is the 3014 portion of the serial number. The 04602 is the serial number portion, being the 4,602nd 3hp made that year.
They're good little motors, and lots of maintenance parts are readily available: water pump impeller, coils, points, condensers, carb kit, etc. through an Evinrude dealer or Sierra (NAPA, West Marine, etc.)
- Scott

Re: Help me ID year on old Evinrude!

Tom and Scott:

Many thanks for the ID of my 1955 Evinrude 3 hp LightTwin!

I was guessing it was around 1955 after viewing a reported 1955 Evinrude DuckTwin 3 hp on www.ebay.com (see item # 1006580495 on ebay).

The Duck Twin description on ebay says it is model number JW-11 and the serial number is 1277187. So I take it that the Duck Twin has diffeent series of model and serial numbers than my old motor? That's a high serial number so did they make the Duck Twin for a bunch of years prior to 1955??

I am a collector of Wildfowling artifacts (decoys, boats, guns, etc - now maybe old duck hunting motors!) and am kind of interested in the Duck Twin motor on ebay - can you tell me what it is worth??

Someone told me that Evinrude or Johnson made a 3 hp duck motor in the 1950s in which the lower unit folded up and it had a plastic or fiberglass carrying case, sort of like a chainsaw case. Anyone know anything about that motor(years made, what it was called, etc).

Thanks again for your help and hope you can educate me on the old duck outboard motors!
I was lucky to find this forum on the web today!
Cheers,
Scaupman

Re: Help me ID year on old Evinrude!

Hi Scaupman,
The motor on eBay is indeed an Evinrude Ducktwin, but the serial number and model number are Johnson c. 1955. It would appear that someone has either swapped the plate itself or perhaps the clamp brackets with the plate on them. The propeller appears to have a bit of Johnson Sea Mist Green showing through the olive drab so it may have been a complete lower unit replacement. The powerhead is definitely Evinrude, and does appear to be a Ducktwin model.
The Ducktwins aren't very common, having a niche withing a niche to fill.
As for the fold-up motors, they didn't come out until the 1960s. Basically the same motor you see on eBay, only it has a hinged midsection with a two-piece driveshaft. They turn up on eBay with some frequency but seem to command an inflated dollar. There was a much earlier folding motor series that came out of OMC in the 1930s called the Fold-Lights. All of the OMC branches at the time (Lockwood, Elto, OMC, Evinrude) had a version. They didn't share anything with the 1960s version...
- Scott
