So, bought a used boat. Is this , attached picture, a picture of a mount for a fish finder? I'd like to purchase a fish finder. Will I be able to attach to this mount if so or will I need a same brand?

Thanks

Yup, that's a transducer mount. Pretty much hit or miss as far as it fitting the transducer of a new unit. You might get lucky and be able to use the same screw holes.

Just make certain you seal any screw holes, old or new, with 3M 5200. Don't skimp on this, you don't want to deal with a rotted transom a couple of years down the road.

Whatever fish finder you buy, the transducer and mounting bracket will come with it. Mounting brackets are not interchangable except between Lowrance and Eagle. The mount on your boat looks like one PinPoint locators used. I've not seen "new" PinPoints for quite a few years.

I've been doing a little research on mounting a new fish finder and transducer. Referring to the picture, is it possible for me to use that existing wire to feed a portable (suction cup style) transducer through? That wire that is bolted to the back of the boat leading to the old transducer I'd assume leads to enter the boat.

Ideas?

the wire you see is not for the transducer..its for a speedometer....it is tilted up it should be down to get a reading..its just a hollow tube....I believe its called a pilot....

Now the suction cup mount will not work ..it will move at high speeds....or fall off or twist some giving you bad readings.....

the do sell a transducer mounting plate....the screws in the hill..but you can glue it on and then screw your transducer to the mounting plate....they are made of Nylon and usally a 1/2 thick ..plenty of meat to mount one to....look in Cabela's for it so u can see what they are.....

I think it's actually "pitot", and good catch on it being flipped! Seems a good design that it moves out of the water if it comes in contact with something more dense that water.

Oh, and I have another suggestion... You could fabricate another similarly shaped bracket, either a little wider or narrower, that fits over the current bracket (and is attached from the sides). This would present a flat surface to mount a new FF to.

Oh, I figured my speedometer was just broken. So I can presumably flip that down and it will go to the speedometer?

You might need to clean it out with a piece of wire. I used a straightened out paper-clip. After that you just hope the hose is not gummed up. That you can try flushing out with water. Disconnect both ends and force some water through. I'd don't thank water is supposed to actually get to the speedo (other wise it would be dripping water all the time), rather I think it works on air pressure (pressurized by the water pressing on the pitot).

PS. A little light reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitot_tube

That's a great idea! I'll do that for sure. Great to know I actually have a PITOT for the speedometer that has never worked.

you can also clean it out using Trimmer line from a weed wacker....fish it in and blow it out after....by looking at it..looks like the mud dobbers have found it....it looks clogged with mud.....its easy to clean or replace....

to mount a transducer with out drilling holes..you can use one of these ....I use one epoxied to the hull and been fine for 3 years now....just mount the transducers to it using right size screws...

epoxy up the old holes with 3M marine epoxy....

I used Marine Goop to mount the board to the hull....clean surface good is all with acetone or Prep sol to remove any wax if any was used...

this board works well.....
