Help me if you can. Question inside about a motor cover

Hi all,

am new to the forum. Been boating for a few years now. I had an unfortunate accident occur 3 years ago. I had a friend winterize my boat. You know where this is going. Lets just say that the engine froze with a bunch of water. Motor trashed. Last year, I had the engine replaced with a new 6 cyl inboard motor. I have a Larson 1989 Senza. The mechanic forgot to screw in what is called the doghouse cover to the engine compartment. I explain to people that the part that is missing is the top you can unscrew to peak your head into the engine compartment.(Dog house cover?) Anyways, the cover flew off on the ride home on the breezeway. So now I have a huge hole to where my engine is. Obviously I can not take people tubing and sking and all that fun jazz.

Does anyone know where I can find one for a 1989 Larson Senza Ser #
LAR26679J990. I am having a hard time finding a junk yard here in Milwaukee WI or anywhere in the USA that would carry the part.

My next question is that I am considering to have someone mold a new cover piece on for me. Might be easier! I found an upholstery dealer that would do this task and make a new cover without using fiberglass for $420.00. He is going to use some type of water proof wood. My question again is does anyone think this would be a good idea?

I cant find any fiberglass custom builders in the MKE area. That would be my ideal fix. I am not to sure how good of an idea of having some wood over the engine compartment really is.

Has anyone had this type of work done or ever lost a cover to there boat. Surely I am not the only one.

Thanks in advance!

Did you not tell the mechanic about what happened. It should be on him to find a replacement as it was his error that caused the loss in the first place.

Howdy, Dombrow.

Welcome to iboats. :)

You really need to read the rules, and this: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=250877

I don't think I ever saw one post do so many things wrong.

1. This forum is about Outboards. You do not have an outboard.
2. This forum is for discussions not involving troubles or repair. You have a trouble.
3. Posting of personal information, including Email addresses, is forbidden.

I have deleted the forbidden address and will move this to the I/O forum.

You know what I did about 11 years ago. I tore out my entire interior on an 84 webbcraft 19 footer because it wasnt as cool as new 97 year boats.

I re carpeted the boat and put in dual bucket seats and built a bench seat in the aft where the ugly doghouse motor cover was. I tore all that out and framed in two walls in the aft with 2 X 4 studs and fabricated a sundeck that went from the top of the bench seat to the stern. It was a lot of work but using 3/4"Plywood and 2 X 4 studs this thing turned out absolutly gorgeous.

I dint worry about the studs as I coverd the fire walls with 1/2 plywood and then carpeted the plywood on the interior side and covered the wall inside the engine bay with foil wrap insulation and the under side of the sun deck.

If you feel like it you could problably use wood with no problems. Finding the original cover might be impossible or you might need to get with the manufacturer.

If its just the square top that is usuallypadded I dont think it would be too hard to make a new one. Its just a coushion with a wood back any way typically mounted with a hinge or hinges.

You don't even have an engine or outdrive problem. You need a blue tarp till you can find an engine cover, or make one.
Moving to boat restoration and building. Perhaps they can help you figure out how to make one.
