My Onan 6.5 MCCK is shot. I'm looking at a couple of used generators to replace it with and I am faced with a tough decision. Both generators are literally the same price so no advantage there.
The first one is an Onan 6.5 MCCK that has been completely gone through. New gaskets everywhere, new ignition, rebuilt carb, and even fresh paint. The advantage is that it is a direct replacement. No mods necessary. It also runs at 1800 RPM. The disadvantage is it's age. Parts for the MCCK's are getting harder to find.
The second one is a Westerbeke 7.2 BCGTC with 400 hrs. Can see and hear it run and it looks to be in very good shape. The advantage is that it is a newer model and parts and service are readily available. The disadvantage is that some modifications will be necessary to install. Physically it's the same size but wiring and remote panel issues will have to be worked out as well as some exhaust issues. It also runs at 3600 RPM so I expect it to be noisier.
Any thoughts or opinions?
Thanks,
John
