My Onan 6.5 MCCK is shot. I'm looking at a couple of used generators to replace it with and I am faced with a tough decision. Both generators are literally the same price so no advantage there.

The first one is an Onan 6.5 MCCK that has been completely gone through. New gaskets everywhere, new ignition, rebuilt carb, and even fresh paint. The advantage is that it is a direct replacement. No mods necessary. It also runs at 1800 RPM. The disadvantage is it's age. Parts for the MCCK's are getting harder to find.

The second one is a Westerbeke 7.2 BCGTC with 400 hrs. Can see and hear it run and it looks to be in very good shape. The advantage is that it is a newer model and parts and service are readily available. The disadvantage is that some modifications will be necessary to install. Physically it's the same size but wiring and remote panel issues will have to be worked out as well as some exhaust issues. It also runs at 3600 RPM so I expect it to be noisier.

Any thoughts or opinions?

Thanks,

John

Re: Help me pick a Generator

Well, do you really need 6.5Kw? You may get a lot more to work with if you look at 4/5Kw units. As far as the two units you just mentioned. If the first one is truly rebuilt well, and is a direct replacement, then there would be little reason for you to go through the hassle of swapping over exhausts/wiring/etc just to make a different brand fit when it's the same price. While age is a concern, how often have you had trouble finding parts for your MCCK? Probably won't have to worry about it a ton, I'd bet.

Even though the 6.5 M-cck is getting old you would have a partial parts motor and I believe the straight 6.5 CCK non marine has most of the same internal parts.
There are still a ton of them on craigslist (from time to time)
And as you said it would be an easy RE and RE.

I would definitely stay with onan, those westerbekes have a lot of electrical problems.
