so ihave a 89 skeeter sd 80 15.7 ft bass boat, powered by 89 mercury 60 hp. boat weighs 800 lbs without gear and gas. my current prop is a 15 pitch stock prop. the setup now at 5500 rpms will run about 31mph. ok heres where my prob is. the manufactors recommended operating range is 5300 to 5500 rpms which should be WOT. my concern is witht the 15 pitch i can get nearly 6000rpms if i open it to WOT which is i think over reving the engine. i do not run that high rpms i usually stay at 5500. my question is would it be better to go with a higher pitch prop to get the rpms down at WOT. or is the extra throttle about normal? i do not gain speed from 5500 to 6000 the motor just turns more rpms. i dont want to make the motor lug by getting to high pitch. so ANY advice you have would be helpful

If you are sure your tach is accurate then yes that prop is too small.

Re: Help me please

If your really turning 6000 loaded the way you normaly boat I would change props. You may have the feel of the boat by now and know about what you need. If you have an aluminum 15 I would see if could try a 15 SS with a cup in it. If your hole shot is not GREAT now ( with the old prop) have the tack checked. I dont mind being under proped a bit. I just dont run wide open.

Re: Help me please

I would certainly suggest trying a 17 pitch regardless of whether or not you go with SS or AL. I think you are leaving some performance on the table if you do not increase your pitch.

Re: Help me please

another question i just assumed that the number stamped 15 on the prop was the pitch... am i correct or wrong. it has like a serial number and then the 15 is off beside it.
