I just bought a 08 Chaparral with a 5.7GXI DP and I only have one line coming out of the power steering pump to the ram then to the cooler. There is a rubber block off cap on the return line on pump and another block off cap on the cooler.
When I took it out for the first time this weekend the power steering works fine but at the end of the day the reservoir was empty. No fluid in the bilge, but when I removed the cap there was allot of vacuum built up in the reservoir and the fluid was all aerated...but no water contamination.

What is going on? Leaky cooler that the previous owner didn't want to replace, so he just blocked it off?

Ayuh,... And he did so rather Poorly....
The system has to run a full circle to work right...

Thats what I would have thought....
Thanks for confirming.

Any info as to where I would get a good deal on a new cooler?

Exactly how do you know its leaking? To bypass a leaking cooler all thats needed it to join the low pressure hose together ,not cap it. To check for internal water leaks remove the hoses and join them. Start the motor and see if water comes out the oil lines on the cooler

I don't...other than the fluid level in the pump goes down after I use the boat....and why else would someone cap off the cooler and pump return line?
Good point though... I will test it tomarrow
Thanks

Some people who buy and try to use a boat aren`t the sharpest knife in the draw.
Some types of repair work border on the insane. Incorrect/improper parts and materials,
clueless as to why the manufacturer used that type or the safety reasons benhind it.
The very worst end up as "Darwin Award Candidates".
Use the proper parts and materials and go BOATING SAFELY
