Help - Motor Identification

[AMD Rules]

Shown below are a few images of a motor, believed to be a 70's Johnson. I'm told it is bigger than a 40hp, perhaps a 70hp? It is a 2 cylinder, with 2 carbs.<br /><br />Can anyone identify it, year/HP? Guesstimate?<br /><br />

That engine was made in 40, 50 and 60HP ratings, and under both Johnson and Evinrude labels, AMD.<br /><br />I believe that it was introduced around 1970 and is still being made.<br /><br />Others may be able to narrow it down more closely.<br /><br />Good luck.

AMD,<br /><br />That is the classic "big twin", no more than 50hp. Probably a 40, as they were most common. And those carbs look like the 40hp model, not the 50hp. Also missing the VRO pump, looks kind of "striped", might be a commercial model.<br /><br />Can you get the model/serial number off the motor. Look at the back side of the transom mounting plate on left side.<br /><br />That block came in 40, 42, 48 and 50 hp models. <br /><br />If its in good running condition, it is a great little motor. Shakes a bit at idle though.

The block was also used on 60hp models in the 1980s... That one has the primer in place of the choke, which dates it from the mid 1980s, but before 1986. It was 1986 or 1987 when they went to the black blocks universally for Evinrude and Johnson, and stopped painting the blocks the same base color as the rest of the motor. Should be a freeze plug on the back portion of the block with the model number on it, unless it's a replacement powerhead (marked with RPH on the plug). <br /><br />My guess - 1985... No idea on the horsepower - between 40 and 60...<br /><br />- Scott

Thanks so much!!<br /><br />I know it is physically bigger than my 60's era 40hp twin. 50 to 60HP is promising to hear.<br /><br />This is one of those stories where a friend's sister has a barn. In that barn is a motor that is old, but "runs like new". My friend knew what corner of the barn it was in, and yet it still took him an hour to move all the miscellaneous debris that was in the way or on top of it. Although he did look for a serial number, all I have is a bunch of photos like that posted. <br /> <br />I'm trying to replace my 60hp Merc, and this 'may' be a candidate and certainly at a good price. <br /><br />Unfortunately, the motor is 3 hrs away at the moment.<br /><br />Anyone else able to narrow it down at all for year? Primer in place of a choke is good news. Early 80's woudl suit me just fine.

What's wrong with the 60? I saw your rebuild, there should be plenty of life left in that motor now.

Eric B... thanks for the interest. My motor ate the #1 piston again. That was a brand new piston. Again with broken rings. I've not given up completely, but would like to obtain another motor in the meantime.

Ahhhh, I learn something new every day. My manuals don't list a 60, but then they don't cover the 80's either.
