I have an '89 Force 125 HP outboard motor. I just recently had new plugs and the timing adjusted properly, and today I took it out for a run! The motor started perfectly, but for some reason, at full throttle, I was only able to get about ten MPH out of the boat. After removing the engine hood, I noticed the mechanical mechanism was not in the "full" position on the side of the bottom carbureator. I could manually pull up on the metal rod and get full throttle and speed out of the boat. I noticed the rod that is connected to the magneto was not going to its fullest extension. I adjusted the magneto screw and was able to get the rod to go to its full extension. At this time, I had about 80% full throttle. I need step-by-step directions on how to adjust all of these mechanisms, including throttle cables. As I said, at start-up, the engine runs fine. Thank you! Tim Myers

if you don't have a manual for your motor ,get one .It should have a section on linc and sync in it. This is a good example of why you need it.:)

First buy a Clymer Force Outboard Shop Manual. Next, syncronize your throttle and timing. Next, adjust the carbs and timing.

Keep us posted on what you find,as it sounds like someone has it out of adjustment, might want to stay away from whoever put the plugs in and tried to adjust the timing, this is something that you can do with the manual and, or this forum to walk you through it

I have a Clymer Force Outboard Shop Manual on its way. I'm not a mechanic by no means but I can follow directions. I don't have a Timing Light either. I could maybe rent one.

Hey are shift rods adjustable....????

Basic timing lights are very cheap at Harbor Freight Company, which is on line also, ebay and even Sears. You only need a basic Inductive timing light (has a clamp to go on the plug wire) and do not need an Advance Timing light (has a scale to set timing on computerized engines).

You should buy a timing light because you won't just be checking your timing once. It should be part of your yearly tune up routine as these engines use mechanical advance and, as parts wear, timing changes. It also allows you to see how each of your plugs are firing.

The shift lever is not adjustable at the lower end. It is adjustable inside the engine cowl. In fact, that is one of the checks you should make periodically due to cable stretch.

All of the adjustments you need to make are in the Clymer manual. With that in hand, we can talk you through anything you need to do to the engine.

Well, almost anything.
