I have seen this twice on mercruiser, both time was rusted oil pan! both we older though!

If you use your boat in salt water, It will rust out, happens all the time.

I had it happen three times on my Mercruiser. Twice the oil filter rusted thru. The third time the oil pan rusted thru. The motor still ran OK, luckily all three incidents were discovered before I went more than 100 yds.
