I bought a used 1988 100hp Merc and it seems to run OK. I checked the lower unit oil when I bought it and it was nice and blue (hopefully the guy didn't just change it). When I was flushing the motor today after it's first outting, I noticed water was coming out the area around the shift shaft on top of the lower unit. Is this normal? The water is pumping out of the "pee hole" just fine.
Afterwards, I checked the lower unit gear oil and it is now a milky/brownish color. I have the old oil sitting in a jar right now and will look for water separation in the morning. I plan on replacing the water pump, but want to know what everyone thinks about the water leaking/flowing from the shaft hole.
I spent a lot of time searching the forums, but came up with nothing.
Thanks in advance. Ken
