Guys still working on my restore of my 63 aluminum starcraft and today when I started pulling off the front of my deck I noticed that right in the front on the lower part of the boat there is a silver colored plaster. I am not sure what it is and I am wondering if it is bondo. It is brittle and I am able to break pieces of it off on the edges. also wondering why it is there! most likley to fix a leak. Also I noticed a yellow type of sealant that looks like it has been painted around the seams. I am wondering what should I do. I was planning on using gluvit since I was replacing the deck but I now am wondering if the gluvit will still work. I have had the boat for a couple of years and have always had to run the bilge for a couple of minutes to get all of the water out. Any suggestions would be great. I have attached pics.
Thanks,
James

I think you should try and get down to the metal so you can see what you have. I'de try a mounted wire brush or a grinder/sander. Easy does it and wear a mask.

thurps is right. Wear a good mask. Always assume the unknown stuff you are about to take off creates "slow, agonizing, turn your lungs to jelly, rots your flesh" death dust. Sometimes you will be wrong, sometimes you will be right. Place your bets. Me, I bet on a good respirator and a quick shower afterwards.

I also wash the clothes separately and rinse the washer afterwards. No need to cut my lifetime of boating short!

looks like someone in the past tried to use poly resin to seal it. get it clean and gluvit.
