I posted a post a few days ago which left out some important info.So I'll try again,I have a 1983, 35HP, Johnson, rope start, long shaft outboard. It runs great but the shifter is stuck(frozen) in neutral. The motor is not hooked up to cables, but sits on a outboard motor stand, waiting to be fixed, once I know where to start???? I picked it up on the Craigs List for a good price, the previous owner just collected a stockpile of outboards that he never got around to fixing and the county inspector told him to get rid of all the outboards and clean his yard up.I noticed upon inspection the bolts to the lower unit appear to be missing paint ,that makes me think that its been removed and reassembled incorrectly. What part or parts should I be looking at ???????Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,JIM.

You shouldn't be looking at any parts. They should all be inside the LU. But seriously, there's no way to know; there may be no parts, bad parts, incorrectly assembled parts, rusted parts, or washing machine parts. You'll have to disassemble it to know.

Before doing that, though, make sure the linkage from the shift handle to the LU is connected and working correctly.

and really, you should keep this in the original post, not start a second one with the same problem.

you also need to let us know what the model number is. This is important. There have been many times when people have believed they had a particular year model engine, and were off by a year when we checked the model number. This had led to incorect info being given due to differences in models. Plus, there can be four or five different optioned engines within one year,
for example,

Johnston 35 , 1983,

J35ECTS
J35ELCTS
J35RCTS
J35RLCTS
J35TELCTS

EDIT:
Ok, IF you'd kept this all in one post......

You say in the other thread, that the model is J35RCTS, this motor, from the factory, is a short shaft engine, not long, and had an electric starter fitted.

You have an engine that someone has stuffed around with.

My guess is that the pivot screw has been pulled out and not put back in properly.
