Alright, here's my situation. I bought a brand new 2002 Maxum 1800.....with a 3.0 Mercruiser. I know it's under warranty but I am just so curious as to what could cause this problem, and you guys are so good at getting it right! Here's what happens. When the engine is cold and I shift it in reverse, the engine bogs down and kills out. This is particulalry embarassing at the launch ramp when other boaters are waiting to get their boats launched. It seems that I have to let it idle in neutral for about 4 - 5 minutes before it will let me shift into reverse. Does anyone have any suggestions (other than bring it back to the dealer?) I am definitely going to have the dealer fix it, but in the meantime I am just curious to see what is causing the problem. Thanks guys!
RadioguyJ@aol.com

The shift interupter switch may need adjustment along with the idle. When you shift from neutral into gear a micro switch kills the ignition for a moment allowing for a smoother shift with less impact on the drive.

Since you are still under warranty, have the dealer look into it.

My Bayliner does the same thing until it warms up. I do not have a choke on my carburetor, so the motor is a little temperamental until it warms up to operating temp.
