So been searching and searching and haven't come up with the info I need but have seen threads with guys with lots of knowledge that I need to pull from. I just got a boat and motor. The motor is a 1968 mercury 500s. I got it with no start and am working on fixing it, but I'm stuck. I have no stator on this motor but it doesn't look like it ever had one. My manual that I got with the boat doesn't have a stator in the schematic of the 500s but the 500ss does. If that is accurate please let me know. I have a switch box with the normal color terminals like pictures I have seen except for the lowest one on mine is black. Others I have seen are green. I will try to test as per a post I found earlier on this site and go from there. Any help or if any more info is needed I will gladly get it and take any help or advise.

Oh and the story behind this motor is the guy I got it from had it sitting in his back parking pad and someone cut all the cables to try to steal the motor. He bought a used mercontroler and installed it and it hasn't run since.

Hi Jax.

First thing we need is the serial number to pinpoint the right model. This is a pull start motor, right?

So got the rotor out tonight. Lots of black on all the contacts. Going to clean it all up. Got the coils out of the distributor aswell and test them. I have a blue and red one. Blue is 10 ohms and red is like 420 ohm . That sound right to any one? I'll thrown more pics in my profile.
