Help, New Impeller-No reverse

1988 28-HP SPL. The motor was running hot so I put the controls in neutral and dropped the lower end and pulled the water pump and replaced the impeller. Then I got smart and got myself a Johnson service manual. What I learned (from the manual) was not to drop the lower unit while the gear case is in neutral (needs to be in reverse?), and do not remove both of the lower shift connector screws, of which I did, stripping them out and then needing to re-tap the threads.

P.S.> This is at the case side shift not the remote control (unhooked for test)

So is a there way out of this ditch or do I keep paddling away from the ramp?

Re: Help, New Impeller-No reverse

Buddy of mine did this with his 65hp Mercury, no manual and then called me to assist when he was lost in space !!
He had bent the selector shaft by jamming the lower unit on without it being lined up. We got that straightened out and aligned once more but after much trial and error had to match the gearshift position to the lower unit gear position. Now he has all gears.
Please note that I am just sharing this information of my experience with this on a Mercury motor. I am sure that there are folk out here that will give you specific information to get you going again.......by the way, my friend has since got a manual !!!!

I think that the shift rod connector may not be replaced correctly - with the screw removed so that it passes through the beveled area of the shift rod.

The beveled area must be captured or the total shift rod will be either too short or too long.

Thanks Commander. The exact problem is the case side selector lever will not move into the reverse position, natural & forward positions are fine. When attempting to select reverse it comes up against a semi hard stop, I don?t want to force it, as I push on the lever I feel some give, I attribute that to the shift linkage flex?

Your illustration is correct; I removed both connecting screws, when I attempted to reassemble the connector I stripped out the threads, I re-tapped the threads to a ?-20. When I reassembled the connector I butted the linkage rods together, which if I understand correctly might have resulted in the shift linkage being to short? Is there a specified distance between the rods, or is it as it appears and aligning the bevels determines correct length.

AS soon as it gets daylight out here, I?ll be opening it up to inspect.

Correct, the beveled areas have to be exactly centered on the screws.

Linkage problem fixed, I can get my poles in the water. I would like to purchase replacement parts, can you please link me to the correct part #?s.

Also I am seeing a lot water out of the exhaust ports below the power head, and next to none out of the telltale stream. There seems to be a fair amount of water vapor / steam?

This link will get you to the parts catalogs. You can download the lists and also the diagrams.

You can find most of the parts for your model through a dealer, and there is a dealer locator at the top right of the search page of the previous link. The Sierra service parts like water pumps, thermostats and carburetor kits are available here at iboats.
