I installed a new water pump impeller a few weeks ago. Also installed a new thermostat. I cranked the engine on muffs today and water came out of the ports below the gimbal, for a short time, and then quit. The temp gauge went to about 180 and then I shut it down. I turned the vertical shaft clockwiswe from the top when I put the housing down on the impeller so I think it is installed with the vanes bent in the right direction. What could have happend? The muffs had water shooting out from them the whole time, but the ports had water coming out only for a minute or so, and then it quit coming out. There was very little water coming out the prop hub.

Sounds like you missed the pickup pipe when you put the lower unit back on. you did see the copper pipe, yes?

The other thing you may have missed is the impeller key on the drive-shaft.

If it worked for a while and then quit, as the water coming from the transom shield at first suggest, I would suggest you pull the drive and look at the pump again. May very well be a defective impeller that the center center came loose on. Had a couple impellers do that in the past 3 years

Something must have gone really bad. I am draining the oil now and will pull the lower tomorrow. I think maybe the plastic/rubber couplers to the copper water tube may have failed on one end or both ends. Puzzling how it worked well after first starting, but then the water flow stopped.

Until you take it apart and look, you will never know what's wrong, let alone why.

I just read another post here and there was a kinked water hose ahead of the muffs. I forgot to say in my post that there was plenty of water getting to the muffs. It was squirting out the edges of the muffs. The strange thing was, there were successions of small spurts that seemed to be timed to the impeller rotation. It looked like there may be a blockage above the water pump. The old impeller was in good shape with no missing vanes. I did put in valve seals after the new impeller, and when applying air pressure to each cylinder, the engine may have rotated backwards a bit. I will check the heat exchanger first and then pull the lower.

make sure your muffs fit tight on the lower unit.Sometimes they will slip and expose some of the water pickup holes and the pump will suck air.I've found the best one's to use are the ones with the centering pin built into them. They won't slip or come off.Ovecourse I found this out the hard way.
