Hi

I have a 1988 88 hp spl on my boat

Looking at a 1977 85hp as a parts motor

Who can tell me what parts might be swappable in general?

And specifically

Lower unit?
Stator?
Control box?
Cdi?
Coils?
Power trim?
Prop?
Starter?

Any web resources are you aware of that may help?

We're there model years that are grouped together?

Thanks appleo

That's correct. The 85 hp engine is a 92 cubic inch version, the 88 is a 99 cubic inch version. Blocks, cranks, pistons, carbs, ignition, cowlings, exhaust adapters, heads, gearcases, shift mechanism, thermostat arrangements-all different. The throttle/shift cables changed in 1979. The engines just look alike.

the 92.6 displacement was from 1969 thru 1978. In 1979 the 99.8 was introduced for the 85, last year for the 85 was 1980.

The 110-115 and larger engines were always 99.6 cubic inches. It was the early 85 and 100 hp engines which were smaller. Jimmbo correctly identifies 1979 as the 99.6 standardization year-all models.
